[RESOLVED]Start menu options are missing, My computer doesn't show hardrives

When I click the start button, I only have four buttons: the All Programs, Internet Mozilla Firefox, Set Program Access and Defaults, and Printers and Faxes. At first I thought I couldn't get into My Computer at all but I found out I could open a folder from my desktop and get to it from there. But the only thing that appears in My Computer is my two document folders, a CD driver, and a floppy driver. But I don't have a floppy drive, so I don't know why that is up. I can still run programs and stuff from my hardrives, I just can't get into them. Also, at the bottom right of the screen where my computer cloak is set to military time with ": VIRUS ALERT" next to it. It should be standard time though, and when I go in to try to change it, it shows that nothing is wrong. I was having trouble with internet searchs as well. Everytime I click on a yahoo or google search for something it would cause a popup into another site, and would never open the desired site. That problem seems to be fixed, I had been running alot of virus scans with avast, it found some stuff and was either deleted or moved to the chest. What's the difference between deleting and moving to the chest, which one is better?

I also noticed two other things. First, when it starts up, half the time it loads a black screen with the mouse pointer visulable. And half the time it loads normally. Second, I can get into my hardrives, but I have to open a separate folder and in its search bar type either "C:/" or "D:/" which brings it up. This has been the only way I've found I can get into them.

 I'm running ESET Smart Security, I also run CCleaner about once aweek. I just downloaded and installed Avast, but only because I knew it had a boot-scan, which has helped. I also have Spybot, which I run every now and then.That's about all I can think of. Here's my hijackthis log:

Hi,

My name is PCBruiser (or PCB for short), and I will be helping you to remove any malware on your system.

Please copy and print out these instructions using Notepad so they will be readily available to you. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, please ask your question(s) before doing anything further.

You clearly at least had malware, but we need to make sure it is actually gone now.  We need to deal with that first, and then we'll deal with the other issues.

1.  You must disable the real time component for either ESET or Avast.  They will conflict with each other and potentially neither will work.  You can keep the one you disable for scanning purposes, that's not a problem, but not for real time protections.

2. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

• Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
• Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  
• When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
• When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
• Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  
• Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

• Then click Finish.
  
• MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.

If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
 If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

• On the Scanner tab:
• Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  
• Then click on the Scan button.

• If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  
• The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  
• Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  
• Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
• The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  
• Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.
 Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3.  Please post the following:

a. the MBAM log.
b. a fresh HJT log

Hi,

That's looking much better.  A few more things to do.

1.  Your system does not have a software firewall installed.  This exposes you to many malware exploits you really don't want to have on your system.  Please download and install Online Armor v2 Free from here:

http://www.tallemu.com/

The link to the free version is on the left hand side of that page.

If you would prefer to use a different firewall, two other good free ones are: Comodo and Sunbelt Personal Firewall (Free). If one of those do not meet your needs, you can try a different one, but check it with me first to make sure it is legitimate firewall software.

2.  Run HijackThis again, but this time choose Do a system scan only, that is the second option from the top in the HijackThis What would you like to do choices.  After HijackThis completes the system scan, check the box immediately to the left of the following item(s):

Now that your system is clean, please follow these simple steps and general recommendations in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. -  You are using Windows XP so you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

• Keep your system in top operating condition, and clean and free of useless files[/color] by following the recommendations in this excellent thread:

• Keep your Java up-to-date. Older versions of Java have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
  
  
• Make your Internet Explorer more secure -  This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    
  • Click once on the Security tab
    
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
       
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
         
      
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
         
      
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
         
      
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
         
      
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
         
      
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to  Prompt
         
      
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.   
         
      
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
    
• Consider using a free alternative browser instead of Internet Explorer[/color].  Two excellent and free browsers are Firefox and Opera.  Neither will conflict with Internet Explorer or each other, so give them a try, and see which one you like better.
  
  
• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish).  If you do not update your AntiVirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - Always use a firewall. I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.  Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over.  I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.  Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
  
  
• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Update regularly.  This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.  If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.  Using SpywareBlaster will not interfere with your other protective software.

• Surf Safe with McAfee's SiteAdvisor[/url].  SiteAdvisor will work with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, but not Opera.  SiteAdvisor is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine.  SiteAdvisor uses the following color codes to indicate the safety level of each site.
  
  1. Red for Warning
  2. Yellow for Use Caution
  3. Green for Safe
  4. Grey for Unknown
  
  
• Update all these programs regularly. - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly, at least weekly or more frequently.  Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.  I update all my protective software daily - it only takes a few minutes to do, and it is very worth the time invested to update daily.
