[RESOLVED]I need help - thanks in advance
« on: September 11, 2008, 06:30:29 PM »
My computer seems to be operating okay, albeit a little slower than I'd like.  But every time that Norton runs, I get a message that w32.spybot.worm cannot be removed from an unsupported file.  It says high risk, so I'm a little worried.

When I click for more details I find this: [acrobat 8 keygen + activation.exe] inside of [c:\documents and settings\daniel\desktop\adobe acrobat 8 professional eng_pl.rar]

Seems that I got something unwanted when I got acrobat from a file-sharing site.  Please advise as to what steps I need to take.  Thanks in advance.

Greetings gocubbiesgo and Welcome to the Forums,

Please download combofix from This Webpage...and read through the instructions there for running the tool.

***Important Note***
Please read through the guidance on that web page carefully and thoroughly...and install the Recovery Console. Using this tool without the Recovery Console installed is NOT RECOMMENDED.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot into a special recovery (repair) mode that is not otherwise available. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.  It's a simple procedure that will only take a few moments.

Once installed, a blue screen prompt should appear that reads as follows:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

When you see that screen, please continue as follows:

  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please post back the following on your next reply:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

I must be missing something as I think I followed the instructions with one caveat - I tried right clicking on the Norton icon and disabling it wasn't an option.

Is that what you are referencing or is there something else?

Thanks!

What you missed is the important note in red letters. Please install the Recovery Console before we continue. Thanks!

Okay, I'm not sure if I did this right, but I did something differently this time.  Last time I downloaded the wrong Service Pack.  I downloaded the right one this time and, as the directions said, dragged that icon onto the ComboFix icon.  Is that all I need to do to install it or is there another step?

I've attached the more recent file.

Thanks again for your help.

Please open a blank Notepad by clicking start-->run
Then, in the run box type Notepad.exe and click "OK".
Copy the below text in Bold and paste it into the blank Notepad. Save it as CFScript.txt...Change the "Save as type" to All Files and save it to your desktop. Now drag the text document over to your Combofix.exe

Combofix will run again automatically. Please post back the new log that will be generated. Thanks!

So far, so good...but I'm sure we still have plenty to do:

Open HijackThis. Click-->Open the Misc Tools section-->Open Uninstall Manager-->Save list...and save the list to your Desktop, then close HijackThis.

A notepad file will open. Copy and paste the content of that text file back here on your next reply. Thanks!

Sorry gocubbiesgo for this delayed response. It seems I did not receive an email notification for your last reply. We've had problems locally with storms...fallout from the last couple of hurricanes and the wind did knock out power for about one hundred thousand here.

I recall my battery pack kicking in so undoubtedly my ISP suffered some sort of server crash. When that happens though, usually they just resend all the emails from the server before it crashed and it often amounts to duplicate emails for me. However, this time I didn't get some emails evidently.

On to business:

We need to uninstall quite a bit of software. These Adobe applications are all out dated and reportedly have some vulnerability  issues. That amounts to a security threat for you if you leave these installed:
Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional - Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Polish, Slovak
Adobe Acrobat 8.1.2 Professional
Adobe Flash Player ActiveX
Adobe Flash Player Plugin
Adobe Reader 7.0.9

...you can download the latest Adobe applications Here. Scroll to the far right and select your latest software under "Readers and Players"

This one is a file sharing application that needs to go:
Azureus

These two are out dated Java applications also reportedly having vulnerability issues:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 3

You can download the latest Java software Here. Select your platform (Windows) and check the agreement box...then click Continue. Click the download for Windows Offline Installation "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe". Download the file to your Desktop and install it from there after we finish up.

The MyWay Search Assistant is considered malicious and will cause you problems from a google search return, not to mention the slow performance issues it also creates:
MyWay Search Assistant

...and lastly, the program below is foistware which basically means you didn't select this program for download. Typically this program is forced upon you without your knowledge or consent through the behavior of some other malicious program. The exception is if you use the AOL software. AOL also is one who cares nothing at all about whether they force some programs onto your hard drive without your knowledge or consent. The downside is, if you DO remove it, your AOL software will break. You can take this up with AOL if you choose but if you don't use AOL's software, then obviously you'll want to uninstall this too:
Viewpoint Media Player

Click start-->Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs...scroll through the list to locate the programs named above. Click Remove for each. Reboot when finished uninstalling and post back a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks!

No worries at all about the delay.  I really appreciate your help on this.

I've removed everything except for Azureus.

When I first tried to remove it, it was not possible and I got this error message: Couldn’t load main class

After removing the other programs, I went back and tried to remove Azureus again.  Now I get this error message:

No JVM could be found on your system.
Please define EXE4J_JAVA_HOME
to point to an installed JDK or JRE or download a JRE from www.java.com

I haven't replaced any of the removed programs yet.

Just navigate to the Azureus folder and delete it. It's not surprising that the software is arguing over territorial rights. Most poorly written programs are notorious for having either no, or improperly written uninstall strings so this one is no surprise either.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and advise how the system is behaving now. Thanks!

Computer is definitely going faster.  I ran a Norton scan and nothing came up, which is a nice change.  Here's the new log.  Do I need to do anything else?
