Welcome to SpywareHammer.  I am grsamf, or Gerald if that’s easier, and I will be working with you to solve the problems you are having.  As we go along, there are several things to keep in mind:
  • Reviewing a log can be time-consuming, so please be patient.
  • It is important that you understand each instruction that I give you and follow it exactly.  If there is something I have not explained clearly, do not guess at what the instruction means.  Ask me to clarify.
  • Some instructions may involve several steps and often will require closing your browser and/or rebooting.  Please read through each of my posts carefully before beginning and then follow the instructions in order.
  • If you are unable to complete any step, do not continue to the next step. Post any problems with completing the steps here before proceeding.
  • Printing the instructions before beginning might be helpful.
  • Please follow all instructions completely in the order given in each of my posts.
  • Sometimes it takes several steps to complete the cleaning process.  Even if your computer is acting better, please do not abandon the effort until we are completely done.
Note: The fixes used are specific to this user and the problems with his/her computer.  Using any of the steps suggested in this post or any that follow on any other computer may cause irreparable damage.

You must remove any P2P software before beginning the process of cleaning your computer.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.

If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
      • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
      • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
      • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
      • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
      • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
      • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
      • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
      • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
      • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.
Whether prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Post the MBAM log and a new HJT log.

Run HijackThis again, but this time choose Do a system scan only. That is the second option from the top in the What would you like to do choices.  After HijackThis completes the system scan, check the box immediately to the left of the following item(s):

      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)

      O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {76886F39-D4D8-4f00-A354-3CC1C364F363} - (no file)

The following startup entries are up to you. They are not malware, but are not necessary at startup. The apps will start manually when needed by opening a program. Fixing them will save some CPU and memory resources.

      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe\" -start
(Description: InstallShield updater - not needed at startup. Removing this may free up system resources.)

      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe 1
(Description: WeatherBug. If you are using the free version, it is ad-supported. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

Please be very careful, do NOT check any other boxes. Then, click on Fix checked on the bottom left side of the HijackThis screen.

Now close HijackThis and restart your computer.

Clean out temp, internet, and other files.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

This program is for Windows 98/ME/2K/XP and Vista!
      • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      • Under Main choose: Select All
      • Click the Empty Selected button.
      If you use Firefox browser
      • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
      If you use Opera browser
      • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program. For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Post a new HJT log and let me know what problems you are still experiencing.

There is one more thing to fix with HJT and then let’s make there is nothing left over in System Restore that might accidentally reinfect your computer..

Run HijackThis again, but this time choose Do a system scan only. That is the second option from the top in the What would you like to do choices.  After HijackThis completes the system scan, check the box immediately to the left of the following item(s):

      O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Please be very careful, do NOT check any other boxes. Then, click on Fix checked on the bottom left side of the HijackThis screen.

Now close HijackThis and restart your computer.

Flush bad System Restore pointsYou need to be logged on as an Administrator to make changes in System Restore
Click Start, right click on My Computer, click Properties and click  the System Restore tab.
Select Turn Off System Restore and click apply. Note: If the Turn Off System Restore is already checked and the Status section indicates System Restore is turned off on all drives, you do not need to do anything at this step.
Reboot.  System Restore is now turned off and all restore points that were possibly infected have been deleted.
Again click Start, right click My Computer, click Properties and the System Restore tab.
Uncheck the Turn Off System Restore box.
This will create a new restore point.

I will be out of town and unavailable for the next few days.  I will check this topic ASAP and if you are having no further difficulties, I will have some final suggestions for you to avoid problems in the future.

Since you have not posted back, I will assume you have not had any further difficulties.  I will leave this open for a couple of days to be sure there are no further problems and then move the topic to the Completed forums.

Some things to do to help keep problems at a minimum:

      ROUTINE MAINTENANCE (AND SAFE PRACTICES).

Routine maintenance can keep your computer running safer and faster.  Some specific things to do on a regular basis include:

Keep Windows updated. Check for updates at Windows Update on a regular basis and install all critical updates.  If you do not check updates on a regular basis, as an alternative, you should allow windows to update automatically by going to Start>Control Panel>Automatic Updates and put a tic in the Automatic (Recommended) option.

Virus protection. Keep your antivirus program and definitions updated.  I suggest allowing the program to do automatic updates. Do a system scan on a regular basis, at least once a week.  Keeping the definitions updated is not enough because you could be infected before definitions are updated to catch a new virus. NOTE: Do not run more than one real time anti-virus program.  Anti-virus programs often do not play well together.  If you have more than one installed, disable all but one.  You can do scans with any other program you have or with online scanners.  In addition to your resident antivirus program, I would recommend regular online scans with Panda ActiveScan or another program.

Malware scanners. You have now installed MBAM.  As with firewalls and antivirus, you should have only one real time antispyware program running, but scanning with MBAM, and others, will help.  Keep them updated and run them on a regular basis; again many people recommend once a week.  Often one program will find things that another misses. Unfortunately, many programs that claim to keep your computer spyware-free themselves are loaded with spyware.  Be sure to check carefully before accepting claims of any such program.

Use a firewall A bi-directional firewall protects against incoming threats and also guards against malware "phoning home" or other programs from sending information wihtout your knowledge and consent. Be sure to keep it updated and allow it to do its work.  If you have questions about settings, read the documentation, visit the site or use the forums to be sure you are getting the full benefit of the program.  Again, it is not a good idea to run two firewalls at the same time.

Safe surfing practices Be careful what you download and what sites you visit.  Freeware programs are often not so free when you have to spend hours recovering from their malware and often lose important data.  P2P file sharing programs and the files available are among the major culprits (as well as often involving illegal sharing). Some of the more suspect web sites include warez (pirated software) sites, gambling sites, and porn sites. Keeping your antivirus, malware, and firewall updated can help, but caution and common sense are essential.

Consider an alternative to IE Internet Explorer is the most targeted browser.  Whether that is because it is inherently weaker or simply the most widely used and therefore a more likely target is an unresolved controversy, but the answer to that question is less important than avoiding problems.  At this time either Firefox, http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ or Opera, http://www.opera.com/ provide more secure browsing.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure -  This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      * From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      * Click once on the Security tab
      * Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      * Click once on the Custom Level button.
      * Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      * Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      * Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      * Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      * Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      * Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to  Prompt
      * When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      * If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      * Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Consider using McAfee’s SiteAdvisor available for download at http://www.siteadvisor.com/ and/or Web of Trust available for download at http://www.mywot.com/ .  These are an addons for IE and Firefox that alerts you to unsafe sites.  When you visit the sites, they will determine whether you are using IE or Firefox and the correct add on will be downloaded.  Thus, you will have to visit the sites once each for Firefox and IE if you use both.

More info and what to do if you get infected. More information on the above and what you can do to prevent infection can be found at http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=398.0

General Cleanup. Fortunately, not all computer slowdowns and other problems are the result of malware.  Defragmenting, cleaning browser caches, emptying temp folders and other procedures can often speed performance dramatically.  An excellent guide and some additional tools to accomplish these tasks can be found at http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=483.0.

      Happy Computing!

As I said, I will leave this topic open for a couple of days to be sure all is well.  After that it will be closed and moved to the completed logs section.  If you need to have it moved back, send a PM to me or another Moderator.

Re: [In Progress] Fake Anti-Virus Pop-Ups
      « Reply #10 on: August 16, 2009, 12:38:12 AM »
the problems I am having are as follows:

      1. I still get hijacked from my google searches to sites like, couponmountain.com, your5choises.com, free-spyware-checker.org, scan-your-pc.org, and the like.

      2. Since this virus attack, my free version of Google Earth will no longer come up. I have even uninstalled it and reinstalled it but it still just gets to the inializing screen and stops running.

      3. As above, my Window Media Player will open and play for about 1.5 minutes and shut down without warning. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it as well.

Thanks for all your previous help in this matter. below is my latest HJT log.

I see nothing in the HJT log that would cause the problems.  There may be something lurking that does not show on the HJT log.  Let’s rerun MBAM and ComboFix again and then another scanner andsee what they show.

FIRST:  You should still have MBAM installed.  If so, update it and run a scan.  If not follow the original instructions, which I will repost here:

SECOND: Please download Combofix from one of the following links and save it to your desktop:

          Link 1
          Link 2
          Link 3

              * Double click on combo.exe & follow the prompts.
              * When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
              * Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.

THIRD: We need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.
          Please perform the following scan:
          • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links.  Save it to your desktop.
          • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
          • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
          • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs

                   1. DDS.txt
                   2. Attach.txt
          • Save both reports to your desktop.
          • The instructions here ask you to attach the Attach.txt.

          • Instead of attaching, please copy/past both logs into your next reply.

          • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note:  You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.
After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.
Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
          Information on A/V control HERE

Post the new MBAM and CF logs and the DDS log.  Be sure to post all logs in their entirety.  Use more than one post if necessary.  Also post a new HJT log.
