[Resolved] computer doesn't start due to virus.
« on: September 01, 2009, 12:08:06 PM »
Hello my name is Medina. My system is inspiron 1525 i'm running on vista. Virus popped up as Mal Hafrm i might be off with the letters not too sure of the name. This has happened to me before i did halt internet traffic for several minutes and signed back up no problems. It happened to me again i shut my computer off cause i was going away, when i came back and turned it on it told me that it was having a problem runing normaly to use the recommended start up which i did and nothing the white pointer shows up on a black screen but that's about it. i turned it off and tried to start up normally, same thing happend. its just very confusing with the viruses because i don't know how to clean them. there's nothing that tells you to clean the virus or delete it, something that would clear it. Any help to get me up and running would be great, thanks in advance.

update,

i tried repair your computer, safe mode, last known good configuratrion, all leading up to the same screen. the microsoft corporation loading sign then the blank screen with the white pointer. i tried last known good configuration again and after the blank screen i got a message saying . . . . stop c0000102 corrupt file. the file or directory windows/system321/en-us/ntdll.mui is corrupt and unreadable please run the chkdsk utility.

how do i go about this? and is it too late to pull out all my information from my system, files, pictures, songs, etc. ?

Thanks,

Medina.

Hello, welcome to SpywareHammer.

I go by Hoov, and I will be helping you with your problem. I must ask you to do a few things for me.

First, tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem.

Second, please only use 1 forum to help clear up your problem. Posting on more than 1 and following instructions from more than 1 forum will cause those helping you to pull out thier hair.

Third, follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go.

Fourth, Have faith. I will do all I can to get your computer working, and if I can't - someone else here will know something else to try.

Before we get into fixing your computer, I need to know, do you have your Vista install DVD? Also do you have access to another computer that you can download files and burn to a CD?

hello Hoov i'm Medina. everything that i have done to my computer is listed above in my first post underneath the update part. i have tried a few selections from the f8 option i believe. i have tried the start windows with the recommended setting a few times and got nothing, along with a few selections as i listed above. my last and final attempt with last known good configuartion i got this message . . . . stop c0000102 corrupt file. the file or directory windows/system321/en-us/ntdll.mui is corrupt and unreadable please run the chkdsk utility << i didn't know what that disk was or how to go about that. i was going to reinstall my windows, but i figured i'd check in with someone who knows what there doing first  ;D  i also would like to know if its too late to pull all my information out and save it?? or did i lose everything ?  i have all my CDs from when i first purchased the computer. the disk that you are referring to, would it be this one - operating system - already installed on your computer - Reinstallation DVD - Windows Vista Home Premium 32BIT ? and yes i do have access to a computer for downloading, etc. if i have not answered some of your questions please let me know and i will do so. Thank You So Much For You Time.

Medina.

That is indeed the disk I am talking about. And it is not to late to save your data. I would like you to go here and follow the instructions to do a startup repair.

This is unless you have installed one of the service packs, in which case let me know what Service Pack the DVD is, and what Service Pack you have updated to, and I will give you the instructions to create a DVD that will allow you to do the repair.

i have not inserted any disks to install anything, i do not know what you're talking about with the service packs. would that be the CDs that came with the computer? i'll wait for your reply before i click the link or do anything else for that matter.

also i just want to add this is my first time with trying to fix a computer so i do apologize in advance if i don't understand what you're talking about. i have never backed up my files on the computer before or have stored them in the restore center i believe. would that have any affect on pulling out my information. in the attempt of choosing repair your computer option, would that have erased everything? or not because it failed to actually do so?

How long have you had your computer? The windows install DVD, does it say anything about a service pack on it?

About not understanding me, no worries. If I tell you or ask you something that you don't understand, as questions. It is more important to make sure you have all the information to get it done right, than to get it done fast. When I first started out, I asked questions, so now that I am helping, I would be doing a disservice to those that helped me, if I didn't explain as well as needed.

Nope, Service packs are major package updates from Microsoft for Windows. Right now Vista is up to Service Pack 2. I have some instructions I would like you to look at and see if you can do. You would need to do this on a computer that works fine, and I think it would have to have Vista to do it.

Let me know if this is possible for you to do it.

What you need to do is to create a windows Vista installation disk with the Service packs in it that you have updated to. Then with that you can ro the repair of windows that is the ultimate goal.

About the installation disk that is needed to make the repair, have you been doing all the windows updates?

As for step 1, you make a new folder on your harddrive somewhere, and install windows into it, instead of the default location.

There is another solution that requires removing the harddrive from the laptop, and the purchase of some hardware that will allow you to backup your harddrive, and then reinstall Windows and then move all your data back onto the drive. Let me know if this is more appealing than trying to slipstream SP2 into vista for a repair DVD.

i'm a little confused, how do i get the service packs to install on the CD ? and do i need a computer with vista to do it? or any will do? as for the updates my computer automatically did updates for me with the recommended setting and it would restart it when finished, would that be the ones? as for the purchase of hardware, what would they be and how much does it run? the first link you gave me seems to be the easiest to understand, the start up repair i believe. i thought i needed the windows vista DVD that i have which came with the computer to do the repair or reinstall. if the best way is with the service pack disks i'm going to have someone help me create it so i don't mess up but their computer doesn't run on vista either, so just let me know if that's ok.

The repair is what I would like to do, as it is the easiest way to keep from loosing the data. But to do that you need to create a DVD that has Vista and SP1 and SP2 on it so that when you do the repair all the current files are there. This does require a vista computer to do it on.

The other way is to buy an adapter that will allow you to make the harddrive in the laptop into an external slave drive of another computer, then you can copy off all your data, format the drive, then stick it back into the laptop and reinstall Vista, and all your software. As you can see if you go to the link, the hardware needed is $20 plus shipping costs. I purchased one of these after my Desktop's harddrive crashed, and it allowed me to pull all my data off prior to the harddrive permanently failing.

So there are two ways to do this, a software route, or a hardware route. Both have thier good points and bad points. I guess it comes down to having access to a computer with Vista and a DVD burner, or spending about $25.
