i'm a little confused. i don't know what a harddrive looks like when i open explorer would that be be a bunch of symbols that are formed in paragraphs? and how do i drag them to the CD/DVD? how do i even open that? in e i have no favorites or anything for that matter i use it for searching only. all i want from my harddrive are my pictures and songs from itunes and a file or two saved in microsoft word. would that be shown in e where ill know to drag that specific file to the CD. and would a regular CD of 80 mins be fine for this? is there a way to just transfer my whole harddrive onto the CD ?

OK, I am getting some pics together to show you. I think it will be better doing that, than trying to explain it.

No worries. I am not sure exactly what you need to know, so I am going to give you a few examples. I even got out a harddrive and connected it using the same adapter I recomended.

Below are two screen shots of what you will see. The first one will show you where the harddrive will show up at. Remember the names will all be different, and you will not have as many CD/DVD drives as mine shows. But your harddrive shows up at the bottom of the list. Just expand the drive by clicking on the arrow in front of each folder to open it. The files are listed on the right side.

Itunes will show up at C:\Users\Your username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music  right click on the Itunes Music folder and select copy, then you can go to the DVD drive and select paste. Then do the same thing with where ever you have saved your pictures. Also with any other file you want to save.  If you have the space, copy all the folders except the windows folder. That would make sure you get everything.

About burning a DVD in Vista, instead of trying to write it all out for you, I found a good tutorial.

Does this help, or do you need more info?

that's great actually, step by step instructions, it seems doable for me. the computer is running slow so i'm just deleting things that are not needed so it doesn't freeze up on me or take a while when i try to load things. i will let you know when the transfer is complete. thanks.

At worst you will have to enter in your username and password. There is a way around it if needed, but just try it and see what is up.

i have my harddrive connected to the other laptop and when everything is connected nothing pops up as detected new software/harddrive/usb or whatever it is suppose to say i tried going to my computer, manage - from the drop down list which will lead to computer management where it then states to go to disk management where all connected disk drives will be displayed in the lower right hand corner, but theres nothing there. i tired to go to my computer pictures music etc when i open it nothing shows up from my drive. i have no idea what to do next. or even how to get to the two screen shots you gave me. that looks like my computer folders but it doesnt seem to have anyting of mine in them.

edit.

correct me if i'm wrong, the two screen shots look like vista form? how mine shows up on my laptop. my harddrive is now running on the laptop of XP would that make any difference as to 1. why it didn't even detect a new connection from the USB or 2. why its not showing up in the same form as the pictures?

could it also be that my data is destroyed? that's why nothing is showing up, cause there is nothing to show?

edit.

i tried search for backup (Z:) and local disk (C:) itunes and ntohing shows up. in my computer there is three different topics 1. files stored on this computer which contain two folders one being shared documents and the other being the owners documents in which neither have anything of mine in it. 2. hard disk drives which contains one drive listed OS (C:) and 3. devices of removale storage which has the link of linksys WRT54G2 (D:)

XP is going to show something similar. Try unplugging the USB from the computer, make sure all the connections are good, and then plug it back in. Also place your hand lightly on the top of the harddrive, the metal case part not the other side of the drive with the electronics, and you should be able to feel it spinning. I have sometimes had to power up the drive, and then plug the USB cable in to the computer.

i tired to unplug and plug in the USB again and nothing shows up. i have no idea where to go from here so ill just await your reply. thanks.

edit. i feel my harddrive spinning. everything is securely in where its suppose to be. the harddrive spinning indicates that it is plugged in and working right with the USB right? i don't know what else from here. could it be that the files are too late for recovery?

i plugged everything just the way you did, not sure if this helps but on the cable the USB red light is on the sata green light is off and so is the IDE/Busy green light. the power supply green light is on. i think everything is connected right.

edit. the adapter came with another wire which is not in your picture, the fits of it doesn't look like it fits in the harddrive, i don't know if its extra or that's the reason why nothing shows up.

wait i unplugged the USB and put it in another USB place and it detected it, a recovery window came up. at the botton right corner it states new harddrive found and ready for use and the one next to it states safely remove harddrive.

Now you can see if the data is recoverable.

ok so now in my computer under the hard disk drivers. two new one's showed up one being Local Disk (F:) and the other being recovery (E:) when i clicked on the Local Disk (F:) a window message appeared stating

F:\ is not accessible.

the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

when i click the recovery drive six folders show up as dell, sources, users, program files, tools, windows. and a message at the bottom right corner appears saying.

Windows - Delayed Write Failed

Windows was unable to save all the data for the E:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer harddrive or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

i'm disconnectiong my harddrive from here and putting back on my computer so i don't break it by accident and wait for you. thanks

i'm not sure what you're asking? if my harddrive works on my computer?? it goes to the loading screen which then turns blank and you're also able to load the f12 or f8 menu i might be off with the numbers. or are you asking if my harddrive works on the other computer? it runs cause i can feel it spinning but i got those error messages. i'm not sure if i answered your question.
