Want to make computer run like new Did a variety of things
« on: September 27, 2009, 10:05:31 AM »
Hello new to the site and would like to know what else i can do to get better performance to my windows XP PC.
I ran CCleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy, Auslogics Defrag & Malwarebytes. Deleted all programs I don't use. I also did a disk cleanup, Detect and repair disk errors, stopped some start up programs and turned off Windows XP graphics. In addition I  went to virtual memory and the recommended size was 1522MB but changed both (initial & Max size) to 1600MB. I am running 1 gig of ram in a Toshiba Satellite M45-S331. Also unchecked Index this drive for faster searching on my hard drive.
After running Malwarebytes I did see a boost in performance but looking for more if possible. I have an 80 gig hard drive that has about 51.6 gig of free space.

Items I am unsure about doing is over clocking, turning off system restore,  loading windows faster by procedure below:
Make Windows load faster

    * Click Start, then Run.
    * Type in 'msconfig' and press enter.
    * Click on the BOOT.INI tab at the top.
    * Over to the right there will be a box labeled Timeout with 30 in it. Change the 30 to a 3.

Here is my log file from Malwarebytes:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.41
Database version: 2865
Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3

Hi Wiktor222, and Welcome to SpywareHammer ;D

You seem to have done all the right things to make your system run efficiently.
Please run the following utilities to get a report on the running processes and to show the startup programs.  Attach these two reports - named procexp.txt and report.txt - to your next post.

1. Download Process Explorer .  Boot into normal mode and run the downloaded file (named procexp.exe), go to File, Save As and save to your Desktop with the default name (procexp.txt).

2. Download WhatInStartup and unzip the file  Boot into normal mode and run the file named WhatInStartup.exe.  Go to View, HTML Report - All Items.  This will open a report in your browser.  In your browser menu go to Save Page As ... (or the equivalent depending on which browser you use), change the filetype to .txt and save to your Desktop with the default name report.txt.
(This is necessary as we don't allow HTML files to be attached).

We can then see if there is anything else we can do.

Thanks for those logs.
There are a couple of things in there that we can look at.  I will post back tonight (UK time) after I've checked one of them out.

There are two entries in those logs that may indicate things that have a detrimental effect on your performance (or rather the performance of your system).  AdAware seems to be taking up a lot of your processing power.  That may have been running in the background when you produced the logs, but even so I found the figure (over 90%) quite surpising.  The other one is the TeaTimer utility incorporated in SpyBot SD.  This is a useful tool when it behaves but in my experience it often plays up.  I have had to disable it on both my systems (running Win 98 and XP) due to the resources it takes up and program conflicts.

So, I suggest you try the following to temporarily disable AdAware and TeaTimer.  If you get better performance then you can decide whether to re-enable them and take a performance hit or to leave them out of the equation.  The following instructions are all reversible:

1. TeaTimer
Start up SpyBot and go to Mode, Advanced Mode.  Click Tools in the left hand pane then click Resident.  Uncheck Resident "TeaTimer" Active.  Reboot to start your system without TeaTimer.

2. AdAware
Open AdAware and go to Tools, Options and uncheck "Load Ad-awatch on Windows start-up".  Reboot.

Let me know if this makes a difference to your system performance.

A couple of other questions:

What firewall are you running?  I ask because I can't find one in those logs (unless it's the Windows firewall - that one always beats me!).

Also, do you use more than one language when running MS Word?  There is a service running that is related to multi-lingual input which, though not harmful, uses some resources and can be stopped if not required.

I could not log into adaware got this message:
System error:1814 has occured. Description: Could not login to service.
Are you running this application as another user?
Application Terminates

I only use the PC as 1 user. pLus I haven't used adaware in some time.
I use the window firewall.
I don;t use MS Word because I only had a trial version with this PC. So I deleted MS Office yesterday but left MS Works to utilize MS Works Word Processor.

I tried to remove the program adaware and got this error when trying to delete from add or remove programs:
Error 1921. Service 'Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service'
(aawservice) could not be stopped. Verify that you
have sufficient privileges to stop system services.

I hit retry several times with no success.
I did the changes to the Spybot Tea Timer with no change in performance. It seems like it is taking longer than usual to open up anything on any website.

I was able to delete Ad-Aware but my system still feels sluggish. Example if I right click it takes a while for me to pick the option I want and when I click on a link it takes longer than usual to open. I use this laptop a lot to burn movies but replaced my hard drive with a Hitachi 80 gig hard drive. I don't know what else to do or what to check. hoping your expertise will lead me in the right direction.

Sounds like there is still something unwanted running in the background.
Let's stop ctfmon running first.

Go to Start, Run, type msconfig and click OK.  On the Startup tab uncheck the entry for ctfmon.  Click Apply, then OK.  If you are asked if you want to reboot, reply No.

Now go to Start, Control Panel, Regional and Language Options.  Select the Languages tab and click Details.  Select the Advanced tab and, in the System Configuration section, check 'Turn Off Advanced Text Services'.  Click Apply, OK and Apply, OK again to close the Control Panel windows and then reboot.

If you post another log from Process Explorer I will see what else we can look at.

One of the services associated ewith Windows Defender is taking up a lot of your processor power.  From what i have read, some people suffer with this problem while most don't.  Moreover, there doesn't seem to be a universal fix for this behaviour.

I will ask our experts here what they know about this problem and get back to you.

Apparently a problem a few people have suffered with relates to a component of Avast.

Right click the Avast icon in your System Tray  (bottom right of the screen), select Stop Provider and choose Web Shield.  Click No to disable it for this session only - it will return when you reboot.  If that makes a difference then you can choose to permanently disable this scanner.

Let me know how it goes.

The avast icon is not in the tray so I right click on the task bar hit properties and switched the icon to always show and it still will not show itself in the tray. I only use a few items from the task bar which are from Advanced System 3 program otherwise don't use anything else except clock. Should I hide/remove the task tray completely and just show clock? Would that have any significance?

There is one problem that I had tonight while the computer is idling it shut down on me twice. Was wondering if any of the charges done could have caused it or my changes in the startup menu that I unchecked?
