[Resolved] Programs 'deselecting' themseves...

Hi,

I have recently had a problem on my computer that is really annoying and I'm worried it might be some kind of virus or worm.  On a regular basis the program I am running (either browser or any other tab I have open and active) 'deselects' itself and becomes inactive - as if I have clicked another tab/program.  

My computer is running XP and has always had AVG and Spybot installed and running when it's on (I have run checks with both programs but they haven't fixed the problem) and I have also recently downloaded / run other programs to try and fix it (SuperAntiSpyware and Microsoft Detection Centre are just 2 of the things I have tried).  The problem still persists so I'm on here hoping someone might be able to help please.

I downloaded Hijackthis and the log is below.  If someone could look at it and see if there's anything on there that might cause this problem I would really appreciate it.  Thanks in advance.

I go by Hoov, and I will be helping you with your problem. I must ask you to do a few things for me.

First, tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem.

Second, please only use 1 forum to help clear up your problem. Posting on more than 1 and following instructions from more than 1 forum will cause those helping you to pull out thier hair.

Third, follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go.

Fourth, Have faith. I will do all I can to get your computer working, and if I can't - someone else here will know something else to try.

Before we start trying to fix your computer, you need to make sure your data is backed up. Also let me know of any software you have running that encrypts your harddrive.

Now onto trying to fix your computer.

Download and scan with CCleaner
1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:

• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies if you want to keep those.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.[/COLOR]

In the Applications Tab:

• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.[/COLOR]

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

• Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
• Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  
• When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
• When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
• Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  
• Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

• Then click Finish.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.

• If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
• Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  
• If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.

On the Scanner tab:

• Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  
• Then click on the Scan button.
  
• If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  
• The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  
• Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:

• Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
• The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  
• Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.


Also please run a scan with AVG, but scan all the files, no exceptions, and post the log that it generates. If it finds anything, remove it.

Then test out your browser again. If it still happens, you mentioned regular basis, how regular is it?

Hi Hoov and thank you for your help so far.

As I previously wrote I have tried AVG/Spybot (both always running on my system anyway) and also SuperAntiSpyware and Microsoft's 'Detection Centre'.  These were the main things I can remember trying before I signed up and posted on here.

I have followed your instructions.

1.  Downloaded and Ran CCleaner.  There were deviations from your instructions as follows.

Uncheck : Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours.  Did this but it's been changed to 24 hours.

Checking lists in tabs - some sections you list such as 'Advanced' in 'Windows Tab' are shaded out and I assume aren't part of the free software.  Everything that could be checked was checked when I ran the program.


2.  Downloaded and Ran MBAM.  Log below.

None of this has fixed the problem sadly.  No matter what program I am using (browsers or anything else) I am still having this problem of the program becoming inactive (deselecting itself - not sure exactly what the technical name is).  As for 'how regular' I'd say anywhere between a few minutes upto maybe an hour between it happening - that's why it's so annoying.

Is there a program that becomes active? Is it always the same program?

I need you to go to the administration tools in XP. They are in the Control Panel. Open the Admin tools, then open the event viewer. Over on the left hand side and click on System. Then up at the top click on Action and then click on Save Events As, type in system as the file name,  make sure file type EVT is selected, and then navigate so it will save the file to your desktop, then click save. Over on the left hand side and click on Application. Then up at the top click on Action and then click on Save Events As, type in application as the file name,  make sure file type EVT is selected, and then navigate so it will save the file to your desktop, then click save. Zip them both up into a single zip file, post them back here in your next reply as attachments.

I don't know what is becoming active and that's what I find unusual.  When this happens nothing seems to open / appear or to have happened to cause the current program to be deselected - no programs open or it doesn't move from one program to another (as far as I can tell) it's just the window/program I am using becomes inactive.

I have zipped those two event logs into a single file and it should be attached to this post.

Well, I am not sure if this will cause the problem you are seeing, but from the log you sent me, the one problem you are having is with your DHCP server. SO Lets start with resetting the Winsock.

Click Start. click run, type: cmd, and press Enter
Type: netsh winsock reset, and then press the ENTER key.
Type: Exit and press ENTER.
Restart the computer.

Test out your system again and see if you are still having the problem. If you are then please follow the instructions below.

Open a command prompt (all programs > Accessories > Command Prompt) and type in
Ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt and then hit enter. Then type in ipconfig.txt to open notepad with the log. Copy it and paste it in to your next response.

I've never actually noted times before but after you asked I've checked and it seemed to be every 30mins - 3min 50secs past the hour and 33min 50secs past.

10:03:50 then 10:33:50 then 11:03:50 and so on.....

When I restarted it stays at 30mins intervals but not the same times (maybe 10mins / 40mins past instead etc).

Go into your task scheduler and see if there is something set to run every 30 minutes. Let me know if there is.

Do you mean inside 'Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks' ?  If so inside there are only 2 things and both are set to weekly updates (Ad-Aware and AppleSoftwareUpdate).

I checked the window update feature and it's on daily.

I've also looked around in computer management under the security section (in the event viewer) and there are 'Failure Audit' warnings in there that are roughly 30mins apart - could this be related to the problem?  There are a few different kinds but I'm not sure exactly what they mean or what they relate to.  Here's an example of one that's repeated every 30mins listed under the security/policy change category...

Failure Audit.  Event ID 615.

User ID: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE

IPSec Services:    IPSec Services failed to get the complete list of network interfaces on the machine. This can be a potential security hazard to the machine since some of the network interfaces may not get the protection as desired by the applied IPSec filters. Please run IPSec monitor snap-in to further diagnose the problem.

I added the snap-in tool but I'm not sure what it does or whether it's even related to this problem.
