Do you have a utility that came with your computer that shows signal strength of the wireless connection?

Hi Hoov,

Yeah it's always on excellent - the computer is never more than 10 metres from the router and I've even had the problem occur with the computer right beside the router.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Hoov,

It's a laptop but I've never noticed it getting hot - nothing unusual anyway (I've had it 3 years nearly and generally it's rested in the same places when used).  Could this be caused by a loose connection to the network card or something?  Or if the wireless network card was getting hot etc?

Thanks for your help

Feel the bottom of the laptop. If it is getting hot, then it could be caused by a dust bunny in the exhaust airflow. It is fixable. But heat can cause all kinds of erratic problems. Is the surface it is sitting on vibrate at all?

Hi Hoov,

No vibrations on surface and no hot areas as far as I can tell.  I opened up my laptop and checked for dust buildup but didnt find anything.

Thanks for your help

The next time your computer drops the internet connection, I want you to run ipconfig again, just as before. Also I need to know the time on the clock in the system tray.

Open a command prompt (all programs > Accessories > Command Prompt) and type in
Ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt and then hit enter. Then type in ipconfig.txt to open notepad with the log. Copy it and paste it in to your next response.

Hi Hoov,

I will post the requested details asap.  Since I saw your latest post it's only happened once and I wasn't at the computer so didn't realise until hours later.  Usually it happens every 1-3 hours that the computer is on but, probably because I'm waiting for it to happen, it seems to be behaving itself last 2 days.

Thanks for your help

No worries. If it goes longer than 10 days, This thread will get moved back to the completed board. Just start a new thread and let me know the link to it.

Hi Hoov,

I hope I'm not jumping the gun but since I opened the laptop and checked inside / cleaned around a bit it seems to have gotten better (even though there was little to no dust anywhere inside).  Although it did happen once since then it has been behaving very well - usually it would happen every 1-3 hours and the error would repeat 5-15+ times in a row or more.  I'm going to give it another day or two and then repost with the all clear if it's not happened by then.

Thanks for all your help

Sometimes just unconnecting and then reconnecting connections can solve problems. I am sure the antenna for your wireless connection is similar to mine, and just moving those two connections around a little bit can cause oxidation to be knocked off, making the connection a little better.

Hi Hoov,

I'm posting to let you know that I think the problem has now gone.  Since I last posted it's not happened even once  :).

Thank You for all you help over the last several weeks - you've been a star.    :)
