[Resolved] New here hoping for help!
« on: December 15, 2009, 06:38:58 AM »
Hi all just joined up in the hope some generous knowledgeable person will be able to help me out!!! Anyhoo less of the arse kissing bit.
My work pc has recently had quite a few trojan, spyware, registry key alerts which using a combination of super anti spyware, avg etc I thought it had cleared it all. However the pc is going very slow and now EVERY time I open internet explorer I get the message blocked by buffer overflow protection due to bo:heap and the same trojan appears to keep coming back (Sheur2) which was the same one that started installing fake software and desktop shortcuts.
I was trying to check my xp has all the relevant sp updates but can't do it as you need to use IE. So I ran a hijack this log and hope someone can keep me right, thanks in advance guys.

Hello newbie1980,

Welcome to Spywarehammer!

My first question is since this is a work computer, do you have an IS department that takes care of computer issues?

Hi Taz,

No we are just a small office so we try and sort it out ourselves. Since posting I have subsequently ran microsoft windows malicious tools finder which partially removed win32/sdbot and a sweep by search and destroy removed a few things so this is my most recent log in case i have actually managed to remove anything! IE will still not open due to bo:heap still and the pc appears to be running slower than usual still. Thanks in advance for your help m8.

Hi,

Ok, do you have admin rights on the computer?

I need you to shut off Teatimer:

1) Open Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

Next,

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
    • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.

Also post me a new HJT log and give me an update again on how the computer is behaving.
    [/list]

    Hi Newbie,

Sorry for the delay.  With X-mas it was tough to get on the computer.

Thank you for posting the previous MB log.  That does help to tell me what was on the system.  It is good that MB is coming up clean now.

Run HJT again and check this item and then on Fix:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

    Reboot.

Tell me how the computer is behaving right now.  Did things improve after running MBAM?

We need to run a different tool to look at things.
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

*Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Go into the VirusScan Console, right click Buffer Overflow Protection, then click Disable.

Now update McAfee if there are updates.
Check for other updates also with Windows Update.  Also since Adobe always has updates going on, make sure that is updated also.

After you update thee above, reboot the computer.

Make sure to enable buffer overflow protection in case it doesn't do so automatically.

Tell me what is happening now.

I have updated everything mentioned, IE is still showing buffer overflow and the computer whilst not as slow as it was is still not running as fast as it used to!!! Thanks again for your continued efforts

Ok, I am not seeing anything malicious and do not believe you have a virus problem so even though the program may say it is a virus, it is not.  It if as it says a BO(buffer overflow)

Now that I am looking back, I see two antivirus programs on the system.  AVG and McAfee.  You can not have two antivirus programs on a computer.  They can cause conflict.  Soo, I need you to uninstall one.  Can I assume you just installed AVG recently?  Is the McAfee subscription expired?

Taz, I have removed the McAfee online virus scanner. I thought I had completely uninstalled McAfee but guess that remained, just gonna stick with avg. PC seems to be running fine so hopefully I think we/you may have cracked it!!! Thanks for all your help mate, absolute star

    Yeah!!  So no more message?

Having 2 AV's can always cause problems.  Sorry I did not notice it right away.

You can uninstall combofix now by doing this:
The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:Click Start > Run  and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:ComboFix /Uninstall
