I have AVG does it run in the back ground?
« on: February 06, 2010, 06:49:06 PM »
I have internet explorer 8 and i go to msn games when ever i play the games there are times i get booted off, it says internet explorer has encountered an error  I get so tired of these errors, Is it cuz explorer just isnt any good? i cant play the msn games unless i have explorer, i wanted to know if avg runs in the back ground? if so i could turn it off while i play? i have add-ons but i do need some of them to play, i always here a clicking sound in my computer as if something is running, that is why i wondered if AVG runs in  the back. thanks. also when i do an AVG scan i get an error messge so i cant continue the scan either. i have taken avg off and redownloaded it maybe i thought there was a corrupt file, yet it still dosent let me scan all the way through any help

Hi capricorn33,

Yes, AVG does run in the background, which is on of the desirable features of any AV.
I would certainly not recommend turning it off (even temporarily) as you will find you have far more serious problems within minutes.

- If you are using AVG Free then download AVG 9.0.
- Also download either Avast! Free or MS Security Essentials
- Disconnect from the internet (physically unplug the cable fom your modem)
- Run the AVG 9.0 file and choose the Uninstall option
- Reboot
- Install either Avast! or MSE and plug your modem cable back in
- Update whichever application you installed
- Run a full scan of your system to check everything is working OK and to familiarise yourself with the user interface

Let us know if you can complete a full scan with your new AV and if you can now play MSN games.

i did run a full scan after i deleted it and then reisntalled it,  but the clicking noise i hear as i play, it makes me nuts, and it is also a sign that i will soon be bumped off msn games, but if i cannot turn it of for any time then i must learn to live with it.  i just get tired of explorer 8 bumping me off at all times, other people do compalin too, they say they get bumped during reading on internet and also during writting letter's and so on, it must be IE8  i have heard that IE6 dosent have as many issues is this true?   as i am writing i just heard a click, and yes i got bumped, expcept IE8 saves your tab, but there are other and many times it says error report and then it close's,  i hate it so. but i need it to play MSN GAMES.  well thanks for the advice, sorry it took so long, i couldnt find my name, thanks again, i suppose i must live with it, i dont have any viru's  i ran malwarebytes and then avg so it is all good, it is just avg,  I also read that if you have too many add-ons this may cause problems, yet i turn off the ones i dont need so iam baffeled.

If you click the 'Notify' button at the bottom of this thread you will get an email whenever there is a new reply - just follow the link in the message.
You don't need to remember your name then  ;)1

Regarding the problems, I would certainly not recommend going back to IE6.  IE8 is far more secure and has some useful features not available in previous versions of the browser.

I note you have re-installed AVG, but I thought you wanted to replace that antivirus program?  if you read my previous post, I suggested you download the latest version of AVG purely to access the uninstall routine, then replace it with either Avast! or MSE.  If you wish to change your antivirus then please follow those instructions.

Is the click you hear just before you get 'bumped off' the same sound as when you open a folder in My Computer or Windows Explorer?  Or is it a sound you only hear when using your browser?

Please do the following so I can see what is running on your computer.  I see your system was running OK after Hoov helped you at the end of last year, so I'm surprised there is a problem so soon after that:

Download Process Explorer.
Boot into normal mode, open Internet Explorer and run the downloaded file (named procexp.exe).
Go to File, Save As and save to your Desktop with the default name (procexp.txt).
Attach that file to your next post.

I will check to see if there is anything obviously amiss.

Thanks.
Not sure why the original filename caused problems but I got that OK.  At first glance there doesn't seem to be much wrong in there, but I will check through it more thoroughly tonight.

Regarding antivirus programs, the rule is that only one AV should be running in real time (as your AVG is at the moment).  If you run two together then they fight with each other and you will usually get serious problems.  It is possible to keep one AV purely as an on-demand scanner (it only runs when you tell it to) but I wouldn't recommend that option in this case.

Something you could try straight away is to turn off Windows Defender - there are known problems when running that application with AVG 9.0:

- Go to Start, All Programs, Windows Defender
- Click Tools, Options
- Under Administrator options, uncheck 'Use Windows Defender'
- Click Save
- Close all windows and reboot your computer

Surf around and let me know if that makes any difference.

capricorn33, you have removed your antivirus protection.
Please follow the instructions below before turning your computer on again.

  • Unplug your internet connection cable from your computer

  • Start your computer and wait until it has fully booted up

  • If you downloaded Avast! antivirus from the link in my previous post then install that program

  • If you didn't download Avast! then reinstall AVG 9.0

  • Open the user control panel for whichever antivirus program you installed and find the 'Update' button.
    Do not click it yet

  • Plug your internet connection cable back into your computer

  • Click the 'Update' button for your antivirus and wait for all updates to finish downloading

  • Post back here when you have done that

i was going to tell you that i did remove avg and installed avast  The clicking noise only sounds when i go into msn games and click on a game, then it will clik and the avast ball at the bottom of my screen will spin, apparently to ck for virus then it stops and i havent been knocked off since avast has been installed, or if i start to go onto a site it'll click to the site then thats it, it stops after that, that is great  to me I think it was AVG doing all the error messages and bumping me off at all times I havent been booted off yet, But when i read that i am to unplug the computer and reboot and all that i never did that but i did download avast ok and it updated and i ran a scan , and it stated i was clean so  So far all seems ok, I take it avast dosent run at all times like AVG>? anyway thanks, how did that file i sent you read? did it show anything running out of the ordinary?
