Greetings sonobeat and Welcome to our Forums,

I see nothing in the log that indicates why the blue screen, however you do have some programs that should be in conflict. Spysweeper, McAfee, and Windows Defender will all want to argue over territorial rights. If you want to experiment, try uninstalling your McAfee...that is, if you have an installation CD for it. I suggest McAfee because of the three mentioned, that one is the biggest resource hog.

While McAfee is uninstalled (or disabled if you like) try a reboot again. If you still get a blue screen, then try it again while SpySweeper is disabled. If you get another blue screen, please write down everything that appears on the screen with specific attention to any driver information that may appear at the bottom of the screen. Thanks!

While awaiting a response, I tried the following while in safe mode...unchecked run HJT at system startup, removed several games that are nolonger in use, cleared the temporary internet files folder and unchecked show splash screen at startup for McAfee. Upon reboot, I then performed an express diagnostics test which passed. I rebooted into safemode (unable to startup normally) did a system restore which allowed me to boot up normally, however with new problems... Gmer popped up with behavior warnings (it should have been completely removed last year or so), the spysweeper kept blocking malicious sites from accessing the internet. I then ran a MBAM  which found two threats  and removed them. System then restarted fine.  I am unable to check Windows updates, the spysweeper sweeps faster than before (don't know if that is a good thing or not...) the Mcafee is not on realtime protection and when checking event logs (McAfee and Windows) I've noticed there are trojans Exploit-PDF.g.gen!stream, PDF-.ac, and Generic Fake Alert....  :o  I suspect that the system restore point I chose had these threats since the McAfee's event log shows them as  having repaired them.  Oh, the reason I took such steps is that the Blue screen came up after the third unsuccessful reboot because the computer had frozen while using the webcam (rarely used program) to take pics resulting in system freezing up during startup when trying to boot normally.

I hope this is enough information. Please let me know if anything is unclear.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Please do the following:

Step 1
Please download the free utility DDS

Disable any script blocker you may have running, then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When it completes, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
Step 2
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from  here or  here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to your desktop
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please agree to do so
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that, by default, have already been checked. Please uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All <--don't miss this one
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once the scan completes, click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives.
Do NOT take any action on any of these "<--- ROOKIT" entries without proper guidance from an expert user.

Please include the following logs in your next reply, Thanks!:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • ark.txt

Here are the DDS files requested. Unable to obtain Gmer report. Gmer froze up and upon reboot I got another blue screen. When I rebooted windows asked to send an error report. After the error report was sent microsoft windows opened IE with results of a trouble shoot a problem with a device driver error.  I looked at the device manager and saw the following device(s) that are causing the problem. They are IEEE 1394 Host Controller and Texas instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller. I haven't done anything suggested/recommended in the article. I will await your response.

Again, thanks for all your help!

You have quite a few problems. Your BSOD issues relate to a couple different problems not the least of which is driver conflict. Your biggest problem at present is a backdoor trojan. IMPORTANT NOTE: One or more of the identified infections was related to a Backdoor Trojan. With this type infection, one can also expect to find the presence of a rootkit.

Rootkit components and Backdoor Trojans are very dangerous because they use advanced techniques (backdoors) as a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information which they send back to the hacker. Many rootkits can hook into the Windows 32-bit kernel, and patch several APIs to hide new registry keys and files they install. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans and rootkits as part of an exploit to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge.

If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, all passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and online forums. You should consider them to be compromised. They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach. Because your computer was compromised please read "How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?"

Although the rootkit was identified and removed, your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume that because the rootkit has been removed the computer is now secure. In some instances an infection may have caused so much damage to your system that it cannot be completely cleaned or repaired. The malware may leave so many remnants behind that security tools cannot find them. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action is to wipe the drive clean, reformat and reinstall the OS. Please read:

"When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?"
"Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do?"
"Where to draw the line? When to recommend a format and reinstall?"

Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will do our best to help clean the computer of any infections but we cannot guarantee it to be trustworthy or that the removal will be successful. Let me know how you wish to proceed.

Thank you. Though I didn't know what to expect, this is surely more than I expected. I will proceed to reformat the computer as suggested. One question. Would it be better to replace the hard drive or continue to use the old one when reformatting my computer?

Again, thank you so very much for all of your help.

The hard drive should be fine once you wipe it clean. The reformat will do that for you.
