I've been having trouble with my Windows Update and Defender.  Every time a boot my computer, Windows Update says it can't install new updates.  When I try to manually install the updates, I get error code 80080005: "Windows Update encountered an unknown error."  Windows Defender won't install updates - I was however able to install the definitions update today, miraculously.  I purchased a Western Digital My Passport Essential external hard drive a few weeks ago because I've been worried about my system crashing...but I can't install the driver, it always says there's an unknown error.  Also, I have an Apple TV.  Up until about a month ago, I've had no syncing issues at all.  But now, the TV and iTunes on my computer will not sync.  It tells me to make sure my firewall or antivirus programs are allowing port 3689 - which I have done, and they are allowing.  I thought it was a software issue...but when can't update my iTunes software.  It always freezes near the end and says to try again later.
I have run Malware Bytes, Advanced SystemCare, CCleaner....etc.  My permanent antivirus program is Kaspersky 6.0 for Windows Workstations.  I have no idea what to do.

Can someone please analyze my HijackThis log and help me figure out what's wrong?  Thanks.

Hello, welcome to SpywareHammer.

I go by Hoov, and I will be helping you with your problem. I must ask you to do a few things for me.

First, tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem.

Second, please only use 1 forum to help clear up your problem. Posting on more than 1 and following instructions from more than 1 forum will cause those helping you to pull out thier hair.

Third, follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go.

Fourth, Have faith. I will do all I can to get your computer working, and if I can't - someone else here will know something else to try.

Before we start trying to fix your computer, you need to make sure your data is backed up. Also let me know of any software you have running that encrypts your harddrive.

Now onto trying to fix your computer.

First you are running hijackthis either from a temporary folder or from your desktop, but it needs to be in its own folder so please uninstall the copy you have and install hijackthis and run it using the instructions below.

Please download HJT Installer from  HERE
Click the Download button. When the TrendMicro HJT install box appears, double click on the HJTInstall.exe. Click on Install.
        * It will be installed by default here: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
        * A shortcut to the application will also be placed on your Desktop.
        * The program will open automatically after installation.
        * You can double-click the icon that was placed on the Desktop to run subsequent HijackThis scans or you can use the icon inside the folder.
        * The folder HijackThis is where you will find the HJT logs that you save.
        * When you use the application to remove anything, you will also find the backup copies made by HJT inside this folder.
        * The first time you open HijackThis, check the Main Menu button at the bottom center. When the main menu appears check the box "Show this window when I start HijackThis".
        * Click on "Do a system scan and save logfile." When the log pops up in Notepad, copy and paste that file back here as a New Message in this forum.
        * DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
        * Before closing HJT, please click on the AnalyzeThis button. "Analyze This" is for use by TrendMicro, and DOES NOT mean "Analyze My Log".
You will need to post your log on the Hijackthis Forum.
        * Close the web page that appears and then close the program.

We note you are using one or more products from IOBit.
IOBit has been accused by Malwarebytes of illegally using their intellectual property without permission.
Please see this for additional information on these allegations:  http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=29681

Additionally, both WOT and SiteAdvisor have flagged IOBit’s site.

A thread in the IOBit’s forum responded to the accusations from MalwareBytes.
It is noteworthy that several responses from users raising specific questions about IOBit’s response and finding it unsatisfactory were deleted and the thread was closed.
The bottom line from IOBit was:“No hard proof shows that IObit stole database of Malwarebytes.”

At least until the issues of possible database theft and spyware packaging is resolved, SpywareHammer recommends against the use of IOBit products.

Also to make sure Please perform a BitDefender Online Virus and Malware Scan here:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
    * Click on I Agree.
    * An ActiveX warning box will appear, click on Install.
    * Under Select What You Want To Check For Viruses.
    * Please Check My Computer and Click Ok
    * Now Click On Click Here To Scan
    * Next, Click on Click here to export the scan report
    * Save it to your Desktop.
    * In your next reply, please include the BitDefender log and a fresh HijackThis log.

And finally, I need you to go to the administration tools in Vista. They are in the Control Panel. Open the Admin tools, then open the event viewer. Over on the left hand side expand the window category and then click on  System. Then up at the top click on Action and then click on Save Events As, type in system as the file name,  make sure file type EVTX is selected, and then navigate so it will save the file to your desktop, then click save. Over on the left hand side and click on Application. Then up at the top click on Action and then click on Save Events As, type in application as the file name,  make sure file type EVTX is selected, and then navigate so it will save the file to your desktop, then click save. Zip them both up into a single zip file, post them back here in your next reply as attachments.

And just out of curiosity, have you tried downloading the Vista SP2 installer and installing it locally?

Consumer Security

If I am helping you and you don't hear from me for 24Hrs, send me a PM Please!

« Reply #2 on: February 19, 2010, 10:49:56 AM »
Hoov,
Thanks so much for your help - I really, really appreciate it.

Things I've done:
1. Windows Update:  when the installing problem first occurred, I went to the Microsoft update website to try and download the updates manually.  The website just told me to run Windows Update and make sure I had it set to update automatically.  Then I tried to download the updates one-by-one, but since I didn't know what I needed, I had no idea where to even begin.  I didn't want to download just anything, so that's where we stand with that.
2. Windows Defender:  same problem as with Windows Update.  But, by some miracle - or luck - I attempted to download the  definition updates again a few days ago and it actually worked.  However, in my troubleshooting through searching the Microsoft forums, I found that something may be going on with my Background Intelligence Transfer Service (BITS).  This service is set to automatic-delayed (as it should be), but was stopped (not right).  When I try to start it, I get "error 87: parameters incorrect".  I can't find anything about setting parameters.
So my BITS isn't running.
3. iTunes.  I can't download software updates to iTunes.  When the installation is almost finished (about 3/4), it stops, does nothing for about 10 minutes, says the installation failed, and reverses.  When I try to manually download only iTunes itself (not everything else Apple Software Update packages in), I get this error message:   An error occurred during the instaallation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT, version = "8.0.50727.4053", type = "win32", publicKeyToken = "1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b", processorArchitecture = "x86". Please refer to Help and Support for more information.  HRESULT: 0x800736FD.
I haven't tried to completely uninstall iTunes and re-install from scratch.
4. AppleTV.  Up until about a month ago, I had no problems whatsoever discovering and synching between the ATV and my computer wirelessly.  Last week, iTunes was at least initially recognizing the ATV…but when I tried to sync, it told me that there was an error and that I needed to make sure port 3689 was not firewalled.  Per Apple's instructions, I added a new exception for Windows Firewall - called "iTunes Sharing", port 3689, protocol TCP.  I also made sure Kaspersky wasn't blocking this port.  This didn't work.  Now, iTunes doesn't even recognize the ATV is there.  My wife's computer recognizes the ATV just fine.  Also, usually we can share our libraries wirelessly….no more.
5. I got a Western Digital My Passport Essential external hard drive when I first became concerned there was something weird going on with the computer.  I should've been able to just plug it into a USB port and download all the needed/included software/driver.  No dice.  I went to troubleshoot with WD, and was told I needed to make sure my Windows Update was up-to-date.  Great.  BUT, I was simply able create a backup of my system through Windows and copy it onto the hard drive.  So I just can't sync, but I can move files.
6. Miscellaneous.  I've been having random connection issues and freeze-ups.  When I try to CTRL+ALT+DEL, I get a black screen after about 30 seconds, then an error that says "the security dialog failed to initiate".  So I have to restart manually.
7. I have been running Kaspersky 6.0 for Windows Workstations since I got this computer about 18 months ago.  I started using Ccleaner about 6 months ago.  I used Advanced System Clean for about a week, but have no uninstalled it.  I use Malwarebytes about once every 2 weeks.  I also used DDS to try and find anything.  I was going to uninstall it....I'll just wait and let you tell me what to do though.
8. Last night I ran Microsoft's Diagnostic Tool … I have no idea what that did, apparently it "sent information" to Microsoft".
9.  I'm currently running the BitDefender scan.  It's been stuck at 6% for about 10 minutes now.  I tried to stop the scan, computer froze, unfroze about 60 seconds later.  I'll keep trying.  I'll get that report to you and the 2 system/application .zip files to you asap.

The file you uploaded doesn't have anything in it. Can you try zipping it up again?

I can't get the files small enough to meet the max. attachment limit of 750kb.  The system.evtx is 20mb and the application.evtx is 15 mb; when I zip them up together the folder is  4.84mb.  What can I do to get them smaller?  Am I missing a step here?
Sorry I haven't been so prompt in replying this weekend - but I'm now back home for the week and will be able to work much quicker.  Thanks for all your help.

I see a couple problems that you are having repeatedly. First did you have a Norton product installed that you uninstalled? Also are you connected to the internet thru a router or a external modem?

Open a command prompt (all programs > Accessories > Command Prompt) and type in
Ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt and then hit enter. Then type in ipconfig.txt to open notepad with the log. Copy it and paste it in to your next response.

I transferred law schools last semester.  I got this computer when I began at Mercer in 2008 and had it configured with their system.  When I transferred to Emory, I didn't do much in the way of changing things on the computer.  I installed Norton then because it was the anti-virus software supplied for free by the school, but then I uninstalled it because I liked Kaspersky better.
I'm connected to the internet through a router.  I use several different ones though - school's, apartment complex's, etc.  I also use a VPN connection when I'm off campus to get into shared spaces.
Hopefully this answered your question.

There is some evidence that there are bits and pieces of Norton left on your system. And while they may not be your main problem, they always cause problems. So I would like you to download and run the Norton Removal Tool and get rid of the rest of Norton.

Also the reason why you cannot update is because there is a problem with BITS (Background intelligent transfer service).

Verify that BITS is correctly configured. Then, try to start BITS. When you try to start BITS, you may receive one of several error messages. These error messages are listed in the "Troubleshooting steps" section. If you receive an error message when you try to start BITS, follow the steps in the section that corresponds to the error message that you receive.

To verify that BITS is correctly configured and then start BITS, follow these steps:

   1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
   2. Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
   3. In the Startup type box, click Manual, and then click Apply.
   4. Click the Log On tab, and then verify that the service is enabled in every hardware profile that is listed. If the service is disabled in one or more hardware profiles, click the hardware profile, click Enable, and then click Apply.
   5. Click the General tab, and then click Start.

If BITS starts successfully, visit the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site to obtain updates. If you successfully obtain updates, follow steps 1 to 3 again. However, in step 3, click Automatic instead of Manual.

Let me know if that works. Also can you tell me, do you have the Vista install CD?

No dice.
I downloaded and ran the Norton Removal Tool, just fine.
I've been troubleshooting and searching and troubleshooting BITS for hours.  Nothing seems to work.  No matter what I do, the same error message always comes up - "Error 87: the parameter is incorrect."  Microsoft seems to have nothing about Vista and this particular problem.

Any ideas?

I do have the Vista install CD (actually, a reinstallation DVD).

A reinstallation CD will not work for what I have in mind.

Is BITS running?

BITS is not running.  It is stopped.  When I try to start it (no matter the service type - automatic or manual), I get the error message about parameters.
