McAfee - to switch or not to switch?
« on: June 06, 2010, 06:32:16 PM »
Hey,

I currently use McAfee Internet Security which expires in about 6 months time. It was less than useless during my recent malware bouts and I am considering switching over to something else as a result of this.

I've noticed you guys talking about various different free pieces of software, and was wondering which one you would recommend for someone who is very good with computers (but not so hot on malware beyond running Spybot and MBAM!), and would like something that is near or at the top in terms of protection whilst using as little resources as possible. Also, my bank is currently offering Kaspersky Internet Security free for 1 year to users. Should I take this instead of any free option?

Thanks,
Rob :)

Take the Kaspersky. Come back when it expires if you still need advice.

In what order do I deal with my AVs? Do I uninstall McAfee and then install Kaspersky, or install Kaspersky and then uninstall McAfee?

Thanks :)

Uninstall McAfee first. You might want to use their removal tool...then, go directly to Kaspersky and install their software.

OK, done that, everything seems alright now.

Just one more quick question - is McAfee SiteAdvisor compatible with Kaspersky? I understand there were problems in the past with them, but I'm not sure about whether there still are. I find it to be rather useful when combined with WOT.

Thanks :)

I would not keep anything by McAfee while you are using Kaspersky. WOT is fine by itself. McAfee is user driven and inaccurate too often. Most of us who are staff and members of the security community recommend WOT more often than anything else. I use it myself. The only other web site analysis tool I use in the browser is Dr.Web's web site scanner. You can download it Here.
