Desperately seeking help on this.  I believe that malware has taken over my system and has stolen my contact list.  In addition my fast system has noticeably slowed and there is tons of network traffic even when I'm not doing anything (much more than normal).  Firefox and Windows 7 crashed for the first time as well.

Here are the symptoms and history of action to date:

-  Discovered when I upgraded to version 10 of Avira's Antivir Free version. It wouldn't run completely through a scan and crashed or froze. Checking with Avira's forum, others had the same problem and it was identified as an existing infection. It was only then that I noticed that it hadn't completed a successful full system scan (with the previous Avira version) since mid-Feb, even though I manually run a full scan every few weeks or so. Virus definitions were being downloaded normally every day.

-  Then it started crashing Windows and Firefox. Couldn't turn off the computer and had to hard reset with the power button several times.

-  Downloaded and ran MalwareBytes which found 1 virus immediately, id'd as "Trojan: FakeAlert" in C:\END. I quarantined this item.

-  Ran a full system scan and MalwareBytes ran for about 10 minutes but crashed at the same directory that I thought I had seen Avira stop on.  I repeated and it stopped at the same directory. This is the file that it last stopped on (there were possibly 3 other files that it stopped on at other times, same dir.).

windows\assembly\NativeImages_v2.0.50727_32\ehiVidCtl\063bdcb7c733d30d0ac1e533ae9191f7\ehiVidCtl.ni.dll

-  I tried downloading Microsoft Security Essentials and that failed to even finish the download for some unknown error. Another antivirus progream also failed to install. I then ran the online scanner of HouseCall and it identified 3 threats before it crashed in the same directory.   I manually looked for this directory in explorer and it doesn't appear in windows\assembly (even with "show hidden files" checked and "hide protected operating system files" unchecked).

-  A tech friend told me to run GMER and show him the log.  I tried running GMER as instructed and it wouldn't run, and gave the error, "C:\windows\system32\Config\system: The system cannot find the file specified."

-  My tech friend looked into the hosts file with a special tool and found several suspicious port assignments.  Unfortunately, he had to go out of town for a family emergency and couldn't continue to help.

-  Note:  Ran HJT just now (6/10) and it give this error message before producing the previous log file dated 6/6/10.  Error msg:
"For some reason your system denied access to the HOSTS file.  If any hijacked domains are in this file, HJT may not be able to fix this.  If that happens you need to edit the file yourself"... (goes on to tell how to find and edit in notepad).

I searched for \windows\system32\drives\etc\hosts and could not find it on the system (show hidden and system files selected).   The HJT log from 6/6/10 is attached below.

That's all the relevant info that I can think of right now.  I'd be extremely grateful if you can shed any light on this at all.   Regardless, thanks so much for what you people do!

Hi,

My name is PCBruiser (or PCB for short), and I will be helping you to remove any malware on your system.  Please do not run any anti-malware, anti-virus or so-called "registry cleaners" unless I specifically tell you to do so.  Running the wrong thing at the wrong time can seriously damage your system.

Please copy and print out these instructions using Notepad so they will be readily available to you. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, please ask your question(s) before doing anything further.

1.  You are using an old version of HJT.  Please go here: http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ and download the installer version of v2.0.4.  Uninstall v2.0.2, then install v2.0.4.  I do not need you to run another HJT log at this time.

2.  HJT isn't telling me much.  So ... I need to run another diagnostic.

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.  You may need to use Run as Administrator.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won't take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.  The logs could be long, so use several posts and make sure that each log is posted in full.

Hi,

I'm still not seeing anything.  That OTL log looks clean, although given the circumstances, I need to review it again.  What I'd like to do now is get an on-line scan run, and let's see if that finds anything useful.  Clearly that file that is crashing your scans needs further investigation.  We'll see.

First, I want to examine your HOSTS file.  The first issue is it seems to be in a slightly unusual place.  Do this please.  Go to Start/Run and copy each of the following, one at a time and then tap <Enter>:

notepad C:\Windows\SysNative\drivers\etc\hosts

notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

Each of those should open a Notepad window.  If Notepad sees anything, copy and paste it to a post.  Please label anything by location so that I know what I am looking at.  And, please tell me if either of those do not open anything or you get an error message.

On-line scan:  Please run Kaspersky online scan from HERE.

1. At the main page. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
2. At the next window Select  Update. Allow the Database to update.
Note: If prompted to run or update your Java, then follow the prompts to do so. Kaspersky requires Java to run.
3. Once the Database has finished, under the Scan icon Select My Computer to start the scan. The scan may take a few minutes to complete.
4. Select Scan Report.
5. If any threats were found they will appear in the report
6. Select "Save error report as"
Then in the file name just type in kaspersky
Under "save as type" select text .txt
Save it to your Desktop.

Copy and post the results of the Kaspersky Online scan. If no threats were found then report that as well.

PCB,

Ok, I searched for the hosts files as you said and didn't find much:

-   "notepad C:\Windows\SysNative\drivers\etc\hosts" produced the error message, "The System cannot find the path specified."

-   "notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" produced only this:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
#   127.0.0.1       localhost
#   ::1             localhost

Also, before my tech friend had to go out of town, he did show me another listing that showed three or more mysterious port assignments that he said might be suspicious (I'm just repeating from memory what he said so the wording might not be accurate).  I don't know where that file is but I might be able to get that info. if you need it.

Regarding the Kaspersky scanner.  Firefox gave me a warning that their certificate was expired.  I went ahead anyway as further info. said it was trusted certificate, just expired.  Don't know if that's significant.

Also, the rate that the database downloaded was VERY slow- at dial-up speeds.  I know it's big file of 97MB or so, but I know from experience that it should go many times faster (theoretically it's connected at 100mbps).  Oddly during the download I may have accidently closed the tab that it was running in as it had disappeared (I was in another window looking for that tool that he used to get the port assignments.  Didn't find it).

Also a pop-up from Windows Firewall said that Java was doing something (I forgot to record the error message).  I denied further action.  I switched to my alternate wireless connection from ethernet as it is sometimes faster.  Having problems with the wireless network adapter and it needs to be reset by rebooting, so I did.  I restarted the download and it went even slower.  Also noted that midway through the second database download, the file size increased from 97MB to 122MB.  I hope I'm really talking to Kaspersky here and not a spoofed site or something.

Latest:  The downoad keeps reseting and trying again.  Remember, earlier in the week, Kaspersky wouldn't run at all and crashed.  Now the download gets about 30% done and starts over.  It looks like it's being blocked!

I'll keep trying but I thought I should let you know this now.

Hi,

That HOSTS file is completely normal.  What you see is the W7 default.

Kaspersky uses Java, so that's what you were blocking.  Let's cancel out of Kaspersky unless it has sped up.  If it has sped up, try to finish the scan.

This file:

windows\assembly\NativeImages_v2.0.50727_32\ehiVidCtl\063bdcb7c733d30d0ac1e533ae9191f7\ehiVidCtl.ni.dll

is legitimate.  It is part of Windows Media Center.  However, it could be forged.  So ... please upload it to the following two sites:

Virus Total: http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexx.html
Jotti: http://virusscan.jotti.org/

for analysis.  Post the information you get from those two sites.

I noticed this folder created earlier today:

[2010/06/11 08:01:41 | 000,000,000 | ---D | C] -- C:\Users\MC\Desktop\DDS & Logs

Who ran DDS, you or you friend?  In any case, I want to see any logs from that.

Please post the DDS log(s), the info on that file from VT and Jotti, and if Kaspersky finishes, anything that reported.  If you can find that mysterious listing showing port traffic that would help as well.  I'd like to see that if it exists.

Once I see whatever you are able to do, I am going to try and find out what all that network traffic is about, and what is creating it.

To my surprise Kaspersky managed to finish the download and is now doing a scan (70% done).  We're in hour two now and it has found one threat.  It was labeled, "Trojan_Downloader.Java.OpenStream.af", partial file name C:\users\mc\appdata\local\Temp\jar_cache430580371355006199... (file name cut off due to display box).  I'll send the report when done.

Here's something odd:  I searched for the file
windows\assembly\NativeImages_v2.0.50727_32\ehiVidCtl\063bdcb7c733d30d0ac1e533ae9191f7\ehiVidCtl.ni.dll and it isn't found by explorer.  I looked in the windows\assembly\ directory and cannot see NativeImages at all (show hidden & systems files turned on).  It is me doing something wrong or is this unusual?

Having trouble remembering how the ports report was produced.  Maybe from HJT?  I'm going to wait till Kaspersky is done first before I do anything with HJT.

The DDS was run a few days ago now by the instructions of my friend.  Things may have changed since then, but I won't run DDS again unless you instruct me to.  I've attached the logs below:

DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSX64
Run by MC at 15:32:24.36 on Sat 06/05/2010

PCB,

I can't remember or figure out how we got that port display that showed what he thought were suspicious assignments (they were assignments in the 5000 range).   Can you tell me what tool to use?

Hi,

I want to do a couple of things first.  First, I want to give your system a good cleaning.  That will kill the Java malware file Kaspersky found.

Download and scan with CCleaner
1.  CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free Basic or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

   In the Windows Tab:
        • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
        • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
        • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
        • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
        • Clean any others that you choose.

   In the Applications Tab:
         • Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
        • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
        • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
        • Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click on the Registry button on the left hand side, then click on Scan for Issues, next Fix Selected Issues, and then permit CCleaner to make a backup of whatever it is deleting from your Registry.
8. Then click on Tools in the left hand side, then Uninstall, and you can delete here any entries in your Add/Remove CP where the software is already gone, but the entry remains.  You can also use that panel to run uninstallers when they exist.
9. Click "exit" when done.

Next, DDS is a pure diagnostic, it does not fix or change anything on your system, so it is safe to run, and we use it as well.  The DDS log is clean, but it looks like your system was infected on 6/4 from the error logs.

Next, I want to eliminate one common rootkit infection even though the symptoms do not suggest this particular infection.  However, the way this diagnostic works, it also checks for forged system files, and that is useful in other circumstances.  Please download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Extract the file to your Desktop and run the scan.
  • Once completed it will create a log in the root directory (usually C:\).
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Please post the following:

a.  the log from TDSSKiller
b.  a fresh HJT log

Hi, again,

Let's look at the port issue.  Please download TCPView from here:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx

Create a folder somewhere convenient, and unzip the contents of the downloaded zip file into the new folder.  There is no installer.  Then double click on the file TCPView.exe and a new Window will open.  Give it a minute or so to work, and then go to the File Menu and click on Save As ...   Call the file TCPScan.txt and it will save to the folder you unzipped TCPView into.  You can close TCPView, double click on TCPScan.txt and it will open into Notepad.  Copy and paste that to a post.  That will tell me a lot about what ports are open, what is using them and where they are going.

Ran Ccleaner successfully but TDSSKiller said that it is not supported on x64 systems!   I looked on the Kaspersky site and didn't see another version???  Any options?

I will go ahead with the ports tool issue.  I'm assuming I can do that out of sequence of your instructions.  Please let me know if I shouldn't.

(btw, I will be online for another half hour from this post.  Will resume after 6 PDT).

Hi,

My fault, I forgot about the 64 bit system.  Yes, go ahead with TCPView, it is a pure diagnostic and doesn't depend on anything else.  We probably won't connect until tomorrow since we have plans for the rest of the day.
