[Resolved] I have a problem!
« on: July 15, 2010, 08:09:25 pm »
I have pop ups on IE that I cant get rid of. Every webpage I visit automatically adds these ads at the bottom of the page. I believe I know what the problem is but dont know how to fix it. AVG and Trend Micro doesn't find it. I have found little info on line with the exception of one. Link below. I am also unable to manage my add ons in IE. It wont allow me to enable or disable anything and of course it disabled my avg tool bar and windows live toolbars. Its actually listed in IE under manage add ons as "Facetheme" I have since uninstalled avg and installed trend micro with no luck. Oh and windows defender didn't defend either. This is the line that may be causing the problem. O2 - BHO: BHO Project - {66D8FBA6-D90F-40A9-AC55-84896F79CA69} - C:\Program Files (x86)\Object\bho_project.dll
Your help is appreciated.

Hi

I'm kevinf80 and I will be helping with any issues you may have. Please be aware that some of the logs I may ask for can be very complex and can take a long time to decipher. I am a volunteer here with a job and family so I ask that you be patient when waiting for replies.
Please DO NOT run any scans/tools/fixes on your own as this will conflict with the tools we are going to use.
Please Print or Save to Notepad all instructions and please follow them carefully and if there's something you don't understand or that will not work please let me know and we will go through it together.
Malware is often buggy and can be very unstable, with that in mind it is advisable to backup any important data before we begin.

Please proceed as follows :-

Step 1

We need to upload a file to Jotti

1. Click HERE to get to Jotti's site.

2. At the top of the Jotti window, use the Browse button to locate the following file on your system:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Object\bho_project.dll

3. Once you have located the file, click SUBMIT and the content of the file will be uploaded by the site and analysed.

4. Please provide me with the results of the analysis.

Upload a File to Virustotal
Please visit Virustotal
  • Click the Browse... button
  • Navigate to the file C:\Program Files (x86)\Object\bho_project.dll
  • Click the Open button
  • Click the Send button
  • Copy and paste the results back here please.

Step 2

Download and scan with CCleaner CCleaner

1. Starting with v 1.27.26 (This version no. will differ), CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 24 hours"
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:

  • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies if you want to keep those.

  • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.

  • Clean all entries in the "System" section.

  • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.

  • Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab
  • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.

  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.

  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.

  • Clean any others that you choose.
4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

Step 3

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Alernative D/L mirror
Alternative D/L mirror

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to ALLOW the changes. Instructions available HERE
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from HERE and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Step 4

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box. Press any key when asked.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

What i`d like in your reply :

  • Results from Jotti
  • Results from VirusTotal
  • Log from Malwarebytes
  • Log from Security Checks

Well I had to reboot and I lost some of the info but heres what I have. I uploaded to Jotti and it didn't find anything and the same goes for Virustotal. I also downloaded the CCleaner and ran. I downloaded the Malwarebytes and presto we found a trojan. Here are the results from that.Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.46

Hi madmanbill,

Lets make sure there are no remnants or secondaries left on your system. Proceed as follows :-

Step 1

  • Re-open Malwarebytes and check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 2

Run ESET Online Scan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
  • Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Check
  • Click the button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push
  • Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the button.
  • Push
You can refer to this animation by neomage if needed.
Frequently asked questions available Here

Step 3

Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date. Older versions are vulnerable to attack.

Please go to the link below to update.

Adobe Reader Untick the Free McAfeeŽ Security Scan Plus (optional) unless you want it.

Regarding your issue with IE addons, yep you should be able to enable or disable. From the tools menu select > manage addons > In the new window do the following :-

  • Select Toolbars and extensions under Addon Types
  • Under Show: hit the dropdown and select Downloaded controls
  • You will now see Toolbars, extensions, plugins etc. and there status.
  • Left click on the one you want to change (it should now be highlighted) and the enable or disable button will show, as appropriate.

What i`d like in your reply :-

  • Log from Malwarebytes
  • Log from ESET
  • Fresh HJT log
  • How is your system responding, any specific issues

I did the EST on line scan and no threats were found. I updated my adobe reader and also checked my plug ins like you said and I am still unable to enable or disable. I am pretty sure that the bho trojan caused this, but I sure don't know how to fix it. It only makes since, the trojan was an IE add on that allowed ads to be displayed and they didn't want you to be able to disable it through the browser add ons. What are your thoughts.
Thanks Kevin.

Hi madmanbill,

Yep I see whats wrong, the malware has altered some settings, I had assumed they were legit. I should have realised, my mistake. :D1

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only.  Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.  Close HiJackThis.  Reboot your PC.

When you have re-booted scan with HJT and save the log, copy/paste to reply. Let me know if its OK now.

Kevin. :t

Hi madmanbill,

Your latest logs are clean and you say that your system is running well, it would be an excellent idea to keep it that way. The following advice will go along way to keeping you secure so that you can enjoy safe and happy surfing.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for malware infection in the future; I strongly recommend  that you read them and take them to heart so that you don't have to endure the process of cleaning your computer again.

Make proper use of your antivirus and firewall

Antivirus and Firewall programs are integral to your computer security. However, just having them installed isn't enough. The definitions of these programs are frequently updated to detect the latest malware, if you don't keep up with these updates then you'll be vulnerable to infection. Many antivirus and firewall programs have automatic update features, make use of those if you can. If your program doesn't, then get in the habit of routinely performing manual updates, because it's important.

You should keep your antivirus and firewall guard enabled at all times, NEVER turn them off unless there's a specific reason to do so. Also, regularly performing a full system scan with your antivirus program is a good idea to make sure you're system remains clean. Once a week should be adequate. You can set the scan to run during a time when you don't plan to use the computer and just leave it to complete on its own.

Use a safer web browser

Internet Explorer is not the most secure tool for browsing the web. It has been known to be very susceptible to infection, and there are a few good free alternatives:

Firefox,

Opera, and

Chrome.

All of these are excellent faster, safer, more powerful and functional free alternatives to Internet Explorer. It's definitely worth the short period of adjustment to start using one of these. If you wish to continue using Internet Explorer, it would be a good idea to follow the tutorial HERE which will help you to make IE MUCH safer.

These browser add-ons will help to make your browser safer:

Web of Trust warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous ones:

Available for Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Green to go,
Yellow for caution, and
Red to stop.

Available for Firefox only. NoScript helps to block malicious scripts and in general gives you much better control over what types of things webpages can do to your computer while you're browsing.

These are just a couple of the most popular add-ons, if you're interested in more, take a look at THIS article.

Please read this excellent article by Tony Klein So how did I get infected in the first place It reiterates some of the above advice and gives a lot of other top tips.
Please keep Malwarebytes for occasional scans, remember to always update first.  Keeping your hard drive De-fragmented will also go along way to keeping your system at optimum performance. The free version of Auslogic Disk Defrag available HERE will do the job nicely, that site also has an excellent tutorial. Also keep CCleaner for weekly runs to keep your system free of clutter.

Please reply and let me know if you have any other issues or are you happy for me to close out this thread.

Its been a pleasure to work with you; take care,

Kevin

Firefox is faster, and definitely a lot safer than IE, you`ll not regret changing over. Come back anytime,

Cheers,

Kevin ;)1
