ok Amazon is sending out a new disc expected arrival is sept 2-5.  We'll see what happens when it gets here.

OK got the new disc this morning and it looks fine.  Still get the exact same error when trying to install win.7 64.

Hi,

Well, I have to admit this is a tough one.  Let's make the assumption that the new installer DVD is not corrupted.  See what VSO Inspector has to say about it.  If that comes back with the new DVD being corrupted, then the issue has to be with your optical drive, except that you said, IIRC, that you tried the old DVD with a USB optical and that didn't work either.  

I just don't see at the moment why the installer is failing with a fresh install when your hardware is certainly 64 bit capable.  Tell you what.  Let's do a hardware inventory.  Download and install PCWizard (free) from http://www.cpuid.com  Install and run it.  In the System Summary screen open the File Menu and click on Save as ..and save the report as a txt file.  Then open the report using Notepad and copy/paste it here for me.  Clearly you need to do this in 32 bit Windows, but I want to see if I can spot anything unusual in your hardware.  Also, do the same kind of report with Mainboard, Processor, Devices and Drives tabs.  Hopefully, that should give us some more to work with.

EDIT:  I've also asked one of our other Staff here, Mister2, to take a look and see if he has any ideas.

I ran VSO as soon as the install failed and it checked out 100% green.  The CPUID I have doesn't have a system summary tab but I can save a text file under the "about" tab and here it is.

Why don't you throw us a tough one instead? ;)1

The testing that both you and PCB have done is certainly exhaustive and there seems no logical reason for the bootmgr error.  So, I guess it's time to look for an illogical solution.
Unfortunately I am away from tomorrow for a couple of days, but here are two suggestions that may help (they shouldn't actually make any difference, but I'm clutching at straws):

1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32 folder.  Right click on the file cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator.  Answer Yes if the UAC kicks in.
2. In the Command Window type format c: /fs:ntfs and press Enter (space before and after 'c:').
3. The command will be held in memory and so will carry on working after it has been deleted from the hard drive.
4. When done, reboot with the CD and see if you can progress to the install screen.

I have read a recommendation that a full format using the MS formatting system is the proper way to go, so I'm hoping that will set up a clean drive as the Win 7 installer wants to see it.

The only other thing I can think of at the moment is to copy the .ISO file from your CD to the pata hard drive, then go into BIOS and set that drive as the first boot device.  Physically disconnect the data cable from your CD drive and try booting up.  In this case I'm hoping your system will boot from the hard drive and pick up the installation files from there, thus eliminating any connection with the CD drive and allow installation to the C: drive.

Again, I'm not convinced this will work, but I will ponder the problem while I'm away and try to come up with some different ideas.

Good thoughts, illogical as they seem.  I've seen stranger things that work in my dealings with systems.  Let's see what happens.  BTW, I don't see anything particularly important in the logs from PCWizard.  I am increasingly thinking that this is not a hardware issue and may be fixed using some illogical method as Mr2 suggests.  Let's see what happens.

Thank you for taking the time to look this over I really appreciate it.  I wish it weren't so much trouble.

I tried the format command but ran into an error trying to format the system disc.   I ran into the same problem before and ended up formatting the c: drive using the repair console on the win.7 32 bit disc.

I also tried running the win7 64 bit installer from the PATA drive and got the NTLDR missing error.  I assume it's because I just copy/pasted the files from the cd to the hdd without going through a dvd burner and making a bootable .iso on the D: (PATA) drive.  I can re download the digital river .iso or copy the ntldr from the c: drive if you think that will help.  But as I am notoriously and inexplicably horrible at making bootable .iso's I would ask to put you guys out a little further by making a step by step 'making bootable .iso's for dummies' post if that's the route you think I should go.

I think I'm also going to bring home an external hdd from work tomorrow and see if the windows 7 download tool will work with that.  I still can't get the computer to boot from a USB flash drive even though it accepts input from my USB keyboard during the setup but maybe I'll have better luck with an external HDD and it does get rid of the DVD drives completely.

Ok so I tried to install vista 64 just to see if I'd have any more luck and I get the same error.  So after messing around with trying to burn a bootable .iso onto an external HDD I've decided, after some pretty ridiculous comtemplations, to take out my internal HDD and install win.7 64 on a machine at work that has no problem reading the win.7 instalation disc then plug it back into my home box and see if it runs.  Since I've already managed to put a ridiculous amount of files on my C: drive I'm considering installing on my external at first just to see if there will be any problems before I wipe my C: drive yet again.

Is there any chance this is going to work?

Sigh!  I doubt we will ever find out what the issue is.  It has to be hardware because everything else is essentially ruled out.  But what?  I simply see nothing in your hardware or the hardware configuration which could block a 64 bit OS from installing.

As to installing on another system, it might work, but most likely won't.  The problem is that the installer creates what is called a HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) which is unique to each system.  That includes hardware drivers and a section of your registry devoted to hardware and what it needs to run the OS.  When you change the hard drive back to your system, I am not sure what W7 will do.  With XP and earlier, we could run what is called an In-Place or rescue install of the OS.  That replaces all the HAL but keeps almost everything else, including software, settings and data.  We don't really have that same alternative on Vista or W7.  So, you can try it, and perhaps W7 will use the info in the system partition (that 100 MB partition installed for W7 systems) to rebuild the HAL.  But, I'm not sure whether your system will even boot.

The other issue is the entire W7 activation process.  W7 activation includes a hardware identifier to prevent W7 installs with the same activation codes from working, i.e., one activation code = one system.  Given that the hardware identifier will be completely different for the two systems, I simply don't know what W7 will do when it sees your totally different hardware.  On the other hand as long as you don't activate on the office system W7 might let you switch out the hardware without penalty.

So, to answer your question, I don't know what W7 will do with that idea.  Having said that, if you do go ahead and try it, we would really appreciate knowing what happens.

So much for illogical reasoning.  As PCB said, there appears to be no reason why the install should fail.

I, too, would love to happens if you try the install on another system.  Best case for you would be that it works fine and that you are able to change the HAL to suit your original system.  At least you would be up and running, and we may learn a little more about the Windows 7/hardware interface.  If you get to that stage I would suggest imaging the drive before you install any programs (use something like Macrium Reflect Free) so you will at least be able to effect a reinstall if needed at some time in the future.

Sorrry haven't been around.  Lost a pet this week so understandably found it hard to care about the .04% performance increase from an OS upgrade. 

Well life goes on so I tried to install win.7 on an external and it failed with a "Can't install win.7 on an external HHD error message" I also trieed to just unpack the .iso onto the external and use it as a boot disc to try and bypass the optical DVDROM drive at home and got a non-system disc error when trying to boot.  Which is odd because the 'how-to' articles made it seem pretty straigtht forward to st up from an external.  I can however run the setup from the external once the system is already booted.  Just add it to the list of things that really should work but don't I guess.

Guess I'm left with hauling the internal hdd on my home machine to work and then hoping for a successful transplant.

Ok that didn't work.  Custom install from DVD on the Vista 64 machine and then transplanted to my home machine and ended up in a reboot loop.  The computer Posts recognizes the HDD's and peripherals and just as you'd expect the windows splash screen the computer reboots.

I'd still love to figure out how to setup windows 7 from an external HDD but unless somebody comes up with a great idea I think I'm done.  I really do appreciate all the time you guys put into this.  As I said before really above and beyond the call for volunteers.  Thank you.

Hi Alex,

This really is a mystery.  I have just one thought left.  It's a long shot and shouldn't work, but then again the other methods you tried should have.

1. Install any operating system on the C: drive (Win 7 32 bit would be the easiest, and probably the quickest)
2. Unpack the 64 bit .iso file to your 2nd hard drive
3. Boot into Safe Mode into the 32 bit system (from the C: drive)
4. Run setup.exe from the 2nd drive (64 bit)

I'm not sure if the 32 bit will allow itself to be overwritten in this way.  Nor am I sure whether the first reboot during installation will pick up the 2nd drive as the one to reboot from - working on the theory that the installation process always seems to pick the correct optical drive then it may work.

I realise you must be getting heartily sick of installing operating systems by now, but I really am clutching at straws now.  Let me know how it goes if you try this - if it fails it may give us a clue as to what the heck's happening (or not happening).
