CanoScan LIDE 200 - MP Navigator has stopped working
« on: November 09, 2010, 06:43:05 am »
My PC is HP a6863w running Windows7 64 bit. When I got this computer several months ago, one of the first things I discovered was my then Cannon Scanner didn't have a W7 driver. This forced me to get my current CanoScan LIDE 200. When I first installed it everything worked fine, but at some point over the last couple months I started getting the error message "MP Navigator has stopped working - A program has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." If a program caused this issue, wouldn't that program be installed regardless of what profile the computer was logged in under?

As a work around I created another user profile called test. Under this profile the program works correctly. It's a pain to switch users every time I need to scan something so I am wordering if anybody can help me resolve this.

It seems like there is something in the profile but I'm hesatent to delete the profile as I'm not 100% sure what I would lose, or how to get it back for that matter. I'm confused why the program works under one profile but not the other. I am open to any suggestion and really appreciate your time and effort.

My first thought is to uninstall MP Navigator and reinstall it. Second, have you looked in the event viewer log? There may be more information there about the cause of the problem.

Supplementing Hoov's suggestions, go to the Canon site before uninstalling MP Navigator and download the latest version of both the scanner drivers and the MP Navigator.  Then uninstall the current software, including the drivers, reboot, make sure the scanner is not attached to the system, reinstall the drivers and MP Navigator using the fresh download, and then plug in the scanner and see what happens.  Those drivers and control software are updated frequently, and if you installed them from the included CD, they are likely well outdated.  That sometimes fixes things up properly.  Make sure you download the x64 versions if there is a distinction.

I couldn't find anything reverant in event viewer and I already did uninstall and reinstall the program from software obtained from the Cannon site. The thing that is really confusing me is the fact that this software works under a test profile. Do either of you think this might be some sort of corrupt file in my profile?

Have you scanned your computer for malware? Are both your user profile and the test profile the same type? (administrator or restricted?)

I scan the computer weekly with Malwarebytes and it has been coming up clean. And yes both accounts are the same type, administrator.

Is there anything running in the original profile that is not running in the new profile. It could be a simple software conflict.

Sorry for the delay, trying to get back into a work routine is tough! To answer your question, there isn't anything that I am aware of. Is there some way I can look at the two profiles side by side, Maybe not literally but in a way I can compare one to the other.

You can run Hijackthis and go to the misc tools and click the Generate startuplist log (Don't check the two boxes next to it). Save the log, go to the other profile and do the same there. Then open both logs next to each other and compare them.

These two logs look quite similar, without knowing exactly what I'm looking for I'm at a loss. Can I upload these to you to take a look?

Well in your full profile there is some indication that there is something wrong. IELowutil.exe is running. Take a look at this webpage for explanation. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/askie/archive/2009/03/12/what-does-ielowutil-exe-have-to-do-with-internet-explorer-8-0.aspx

It looks like you may be better off moving everything to the new profile, and deleting the old one.
