Can you do a screenshot of your entire desktop and post it up with your next response?
Are you having any other problems now, or do you remember if there was a problem just before this happened? Something that you did not mention in the first post? Were you messing with any of the services in the Admin tools? (I know what you said earlier, but I am trying to find something to grab hold of to get us to the problem). Even if it was something small and seemingly unconnected may help.

Please download RunScanner
  • Save it to a folder you create such as C:\Runscanner (this assumes Windows is installed on your C: drive).
  • Launch Runscanner by double-clicking runscanner.exe within the C:\Runscanner folder.
  • Vista users must also click Continue to open Runscanner when prompted by User Account Control (UAC)
  • Check Beginner Mode
  • Click Scan computer
  • Your will see a "Runscanner scan in progress" window displayed while Runscanner scans your system
  • At the conclusion of the scan, save the run file called runscanner.run to your documents folder or directly to the Runscanner folder. This is the file you will need to upload.
  • A runscanner.log file will automatically open in Notepad. Just close the Notepad window because, it is ONLY the runscanner.run file that we are interested in.
  • Next, zip up the runscanner.run file that you just saved.
  • I want you to upload the zipped runscanner.run file as an attachment in your next reply
  • To do that choose "Additional Options" under "Post Reply"
  • Browse to the zipped RUN file location and then click the "Post" button to attach the file.
  • I will review the run file, and then upload it back to you with items marked for deletion.
  • Please await my directions and the returned RUN file, and do not delete anything in the interim

That Runscanner link is dead.
I sent the pictures to the e-mail address you provided. The first one shows my entire screen as it looks after I log in, the second shows what the white box contains since it's barely visible in the first (it's just a window of "My Computer"). That's all there is, just black and that window.

So, let's go over everything I did before all this stuff happened. I uninstalled some games. Global Agenda was one of them, another game called Requiem, Dawn of War and Dawn of War: Winter Assault, Champions Online. I also uninstalled a Logitech program I had installed to use this **** webcam that I have, but since I could never get the program running correctly I uninstalled it. I was updating my virus protection and was trying to upgrade to the newest copy of Avira but ended up getting the new copy of avg, so I uninstalled the old copy of Avira and was going to try out avg for a bit. I updated all my other scanners, like Spybot and Mal bytes and ran both plus the new avg. Everything came back fine. I made an mp3 cd using Pepsky (I think that's how it's spelled). I believe that was the last thing I did before I come home to the problem I'm now facing. I like I also uninstalled Aquamark (used to test your graphic cards performance) and Belarc adviser.

I was thinking perhaps my graphics card may be failing? I have a Nvidia 9800 gtx 512mb card in my rig at the moment.

Hope at least one of those things helps :-/

It is not the graphics card. It is to specific. For the runscanner link, try this page.

Also before posting up the runscanner log, I would like you to go to the start button and then to the run command and type in sfc /scannow . A command prompt should be running during the scan. If it tells you to do something, follow the instructions. If you can't tell me what it told you.

Once it is done, reboot and see if you can change the desktop.

There is no "start" button, just like in the picture. There is only a black screen and a window, that is all. No start button, no menu, no nothing. Is there another way I can run something without it?

Sorry, I am having a hard time making changes from what we normally use, to what you have. In you're my computer window, go to this file and double click on it.

c:\system32\cmd.exe

Then in the command prompt, type in sfc /scannow and follow any instructions. After it is done, reboot windows and let me know how it goes.

I'm about to use Runscanner. I came across something that bothered me though. This is my computer and I'm the only one who uses it. There is only one profile on it. Various programs have been telling me that I have no administrator privileges! How is that possible?

I am beginning to think that explorer.exe is not running, which is basically windows. If it is not, then all the permissions and your profile is not accessible. That is one thing I am hoping to find out with runscanner.

Also, when I ran the cmd.exe and typed in sfc / scannow it told me I needed to be an administrator in a console session to run it. I ran runscanner and have everything for that though.

Do you have your Vista install DVD? Not a system restore disc but an install disc?

Also can you tell me what kind of harddrive is installed on this computer?

No dvd came with the computer so that would be a no. When you mean file search, do you mean can I use the search tool in the my computer window? If so, yes.

Do a search for explorer.exe and once you find it, (if you can) run it.

It wouldn't find the search unless I was already in the windows folder which is odd. I ran it and it just opened up another my computer window.
