KB3194496 failed updates & work-around
« on: October 03, 2016, 11:59:24 PM »
Windows 10 KB3194496 a cumulative update has been known to fail for lots of folks.   Not all.  But quite a notable high number judging by posts on other venues.
It failed on two of my home pc's, multiple times.

it had to do with having to remove some Windows scheduled tasks for Xbox & some reg entries for Xbox  before this cumulative update finally took hold.  {I do not have Xbox nor do I play it.}

The tasks & reg entries are in the 2 cited articles.
See this thread

Here what I have done.
a   Saved the kb-update cab from the MS Windows update catalog.    Shortened the name of the cab file to make it easier to type the filename later.  Saved the cab file to a special folder on my C drive.
b   Deleted the afore mentioned tasks & reg entries.
c   While Windows is in normal mode, open an elevated command prompt window.
d   Use DISM to apply the update-cab into the current Windows image.
Basically that command line goes like this
DISM /online /add-package /packagepath:c:\folder-name\cab-name

Worked just fine.  DISM requested a reboot when was done & then all is good.
Current version 1607  build 14393.222

By the by, this same procedure had failed 2 days ago   ( which was before the deletions cited above).

Good grief, Charlie Brown !
The problem appears  due to one flawed bits for Xbox service for x64 "amd64_windows-gaming-xbox..e-service-component_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.14393.206_none_8d69e9ef51b61cf1"

Microsoft releases fix for Windows 10 cumulative update issues

Quote
The terse description of the file describes it simply: "Script to fix Xbox Scheduled Task leftover regkeys that blocks update for insider builds prior to 14388." There's no indication of how many systems were affected, but the number is probably in the hundreds of thousands, representing systems that were in the Windows Insider Program, receiving preview releases, during the first half of 2016 before switching to the public branch.
Although that number is small, it represents an unusually influential group of Windows 10 users, including a fair number of tech reporters who specialize in Microsoft topics.
