[In Progress] No internet connection
« on: October 11, 2016, 09:58:32 PM »
I have a dell inspiron 3521. I already ran rkill as well as malwarebytes.

It will not let me do a factory reset or connect to the internet. Also, the speakers are not working (but that could also be unrelated - it says "the audio service is not running).

Below are the DDS logs. Please let me know if you need anything else. Thanks so much for your help!

Hello, welcome to SpywareHammer.

I go by Hoov, and I will be helping you with your problem. I must ask you to do a few things for me.

First, tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem. Also tell me any other problems you are having, no matter how small or long you have been dealing with them.

Second, please only use 1 forum to help clear up your problem. Posting on more than 1 and following instructions from more than 1 forum will cause those helping you to pull out thier hair.

Third, follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go.

Fourth, Have faith. I will do all I can to get your computer working, and if I can't - someone else here will know something else to try.

Fifth, if we start this fix, I need you to stick with me until the end. Just because your computer is running better does not mean it is fixed.

Before we start trying to fix your computer, you need to make sure your data is backed up. Also let me know of any software you have running that encrypts your harddrive.

One last thing, I need you to tell me if this computer belongs to a school or to a company or orginization of some kind. If it does, please let me know. Also tell me if there is an IT department responsible for this computer.

Now onto trying to fix your computer.

When you ran DDS you should also have gotten a log named attach.txt. Please copy the contents and post it up as a response.

Also, can you post the results of the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan?

Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing, the factory reset that you are talking of, is that a factory restore of the hard drive so that you end up with what you had when you purchased the system?

About the internet connection, please follow the instructions below.

In the search box on the taskbar, type Command prompt, press and hold (or right-click) Command prompt, and then select Run as administrator > Yes.
At the command prompt, run the following commands in the listed order, and then check to see if that fixes your connection problem:
Type netsh winsock reset and press Enter.
Type netsh int ip reset and press Enter.
Type ipconfig /release and press Enter.
Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter.
Type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.

Hi Hoov,

Thank you so much for your quick reply. The virus started toward the end of the summer in August - stupidly tried to download something sketchy.

When it initially happened I couldn't connect to the internet and it was playing weird sounds on its own. It wouldn't let me run Windows Defender and I couldn't download any type of antivirus. Currently I have it the wifi off and the laptop in safe mode. I cannot use the search bar either.

So far I have run malwarebytes, rkill, CCleaner and JRT (I believe that is all).

Everything is backed up but I do not know if there is any software that encrypts the hard drive. The computer doesn't belong to a school but it is on school wifi.

The factory reset was to restore it to how it was when I purchased it (it didn't allow me to do that).

Also, I just took it out of safemode and now a pop-up came up about "Trojan Spam Worms" and gave me a number to call. I didn't touch it and it went away

I'm having trouble connecting to the internet so I'm not sure if that is because of the virus or not. It says to check the proxy address but I can't change any of the settings (this is after I tried the commands in the command prompt).

OK, I am assuming that you have access to another computer that is clean. What I need you to do is to download ESET SysRescue and run a scan on your computer. The easiest way is with a USB drive, but you can also use a CD. The instructions on how to create the media and how to use it are here.

Do a custom scan and scan all the files on your computer. Go ahead and remove anything it flags. If you can save the log, post it up after the scan. If not, just give me a general idea what was removed.

When I try to run the ESET program by creating a USB it says it fails to create. Do I need a USB with more storage?

How big a USB drive are you using? Do you have a blank DVD that you can try that way?

I also tried to run it with a CD and the program still would not work. Should I enter safe mode and try running it?

Are you still trying to create the CD? You are doing this on a clean computer correct?

Sorry for the lack of reply the past few days. OK so the problem is that the clean computer I've been using is a mac and I'm not able to create the USB or CD on a mac. I am at college so I tried to use a computer on campus but I don't have administrative access so I'm not able to run the program on those computers either.

That explains the difficulty. Macs and PC's are like Michigan State and Ohio State.

On the problem computer, go here and click the scan now button. Follow the instructions. Let me know how it goes.
